Coming less than three weeks after the devastating Great Fire of February 1902, the flood dealt another crippling blow to a city that was already struggling to recover. Torrential rains, melting snow, and swollen tributaries caused the Passaic River to overflow, inundating homes, factories, and businesses throughout Paterson and the surrounding valley. Contemporary observers described it as the worst flood ever experienced in the Passaic River basin.

A Perfect Storm

In late February 1902, northern New Jersey experienced heavy rainfall combined with an unusually warm spell that rapidly melted deep snow accumulated throughout the Passaic River watershed. The situation worsened when a dam on the Whippany River failed, sending additional floodwaters downstream into the Passaic River.

On Friday, February 28, the river began rising rapidly. By Saturday evening, low-lying streets were underwater, and by Sunday, March 2, the Passaic River had reached its highest level ever recorded to that date, surpassing all previous flood records.

Paterson Under Water

The flooding was concentrated in the low-lying districts along the Passaic River, where many of Paterson’s industries depended on water power from the Great Falls and raceway system.

Among the hardest-hit areas were:

River Street

Water Street

Bridge Street

Main Street near the river

West Street

Mill districts surrounding the raceways

Residential neighborhoods along the riverbanks

Water filled streets to depths of five to seven feet, transforming sections of Paterson into what newspapers described as “a modern Venice.” Boats were used to rescue residents trapped in their homes, and families were evacuated through second-story windows as the water continued to rise.

Impact on Industry

Although the Great Fire had largely destroyed Paterson’s commercial business district, many of the city’s silk mills and manufacturing plants had escaped the flames. The flood now threatened these industries.

Factories along the river were forced to shut down as floodwaters entered their basements and machinery rooms. Damage included:

Flooded silk mills

Damaged water-powered machinery

Washed-out roads

Destroyed sidewalks

Damaged bridges

Interrupted railroad service

Thousands of workers were temporarily unemployed while businesses cleaned and repaired their facilities.

Damage Throughout the Valley

The flood extended far beyond Paterson. Communities throughout the Passaic River basin—including Little Falls, Passaic, and Newark—experienced severe flooding. Bridges were damaged or destroyed, roads became impassable, and transportation throughout northern New Jersey was disrupted.

The U.S. Geological Survey later described the event as the most destructive flood ever known in the Passaic Valley up to that time.

Rescue and Relief

Police officers, firefighters, and volunteers worked continuously to rescue stranded residents. Rowboats and small craft became the only means of transportation in many neighborhoods.

Churches, schools, and public buildings sheltered displaced families. Local charities and relief organizations distributed food, clothing, and supplies to those whose homes had been flooded.

Despite the widespread destruction, relatively few lives were lost in Paterson because rescue efforts began quickly as the river rose.

Recovery

The floodwaters gradually receded during the first week of March, leaving behind mud, debris, and extensive damage. Businesses faced weeks of cleanup, while homeowners struggled to salvage possessions and repair buildings.

The flood compounded the city’s financial difficulties following the Great Fire. Insurance claims, reconstruction costs, and business interruptions placed enormous strain on both the municipal government and private citizens.

Yet, as after the fire, Paterson’s residents and business owners demonstrated remarkable resilience. Industries resumed production, damaged infrastructure was repaired, and reconstruction continued throughout the year.

Lasting Legacy

The Great Flood of 1902 highlighted the vulnerability of communities along the Passaic River and demonstrated the need for improved flood forecasting, watershed management, and river engineering. The disaster also influenced later efforts to strengthen bridges, improve drainage systems, and develop flood-control measures throughout the Passaic Valley.

Together with the Great Fire of 1902 and the Paterson Tornado of 1903, the flood forms part of a remarkable series of disasters that struck Paterson in the early twentieth century. Despite suffering three major catastrophes in little more than a year, the city recovered and entered a new era of growth, rebuilding much of its downtown with modern, fire-resistant buildings and continuing its role as America’s leading Silk City.

The Great Flood of 1902 was one of the worst natural disasters in the history of Paterson, New Jersey.
