Located at <strong data-start=\"171\" data-end=\"192\">155 Market Street<\/strong> in downtown Paterson, it occupies the block bounded by Market, Washington, Ellison, and Colt Streets. The building was completed in <strong data-start=\"325\" data-end=\"333\">1896<\/strong> as part of the city&#8217;s centennial celebration and was designed by the renowned New York architectural firm <strong data-start=\"440\" data-end=\"464\">Carr\u00e8re and Hastings<\/strong>, later famous for designing the New York Public Library. It was modeled after the <strong data-start=\"547\" data-end=\"593\">H\u00f4tel de Ville (City Hall) in Lyon, France<\/strong>, a fitting tribute to Paterson&#8217;s prominence as America&#8217;s Silk City.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"gb3e8g\" data-start=\"701\" data-end=\"716\">Architecture<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"718\" data-end=\"785\">The building is constructed in the <strong data-start=\"753\" data-end=\"773\">Beaux-Arts style<\/strong>, featuring:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"787\" data-end=\"1040\">\n<li data-section-id=\"44b0k\" data-start=\"787\" data-end=\"838\">A grand symmetrical fa\u00e7ade of limestone and brick<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1royhi0\" data-start=\"839\" data-end=\"872\">Classical columns and pilasters<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"78imz2\" data-start=\"873\" data-end=\"898\">Ornate carved stonework<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"gnu554\" data-start=\"899\" data-end=\"930\">A monumental central entrance<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1cmzs1z\" data-start=\"931\" data-end=\"970\">Decorative interior marble staircases<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1fr2201\" data-start=\"971\" data-end=\"1003\">Historic stained-glass windows<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1dfnoai\" data-start=\"1004\" data-end=\"1040\">An impressive City Council Chamber<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1042\" data-end=\"1218\">Its design reflected Paterson&#8217;s prosperity during the late nineteenth century, when it was one of the nation&#8217;s leading industrial centers.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"1xax4w2\" data-start=\"1220\" data-end=\"1245\">The Great Fire of 1902<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1247\" data-end=\"1365\">When the <strong data-start=\"1256\" data-end=\"1279\">Great Paterson Fire<\/strong> swept through downtown in February 1902, much of the business district was destroyed.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1367\" data-end=\"1571\">City Hall survived structurally, although its interior was heavily damaged by fire. During reconstruction, municipal offices were temporarily relocated to several buildings throughout the city, including:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1573\" data-end=\"1700\">\n<li data-section-id=\"1xd71ey\" data-start=\"1573\" data-end=\"1604\">The Passaic County Courthouse<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"zb87nt\" data-start=\"1605\" data-end=\"1622\">The Post Office<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"oojzv9\" data-start=\"1623\" data-end=\"1646\">The Entre Nous Lyceum<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"p443bz\" data-start=\"1647\" data-end=\"1674\">First Presbyterian Church<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"91jmuc\" data-start=\"1675\" data-end=\"1700\">Other temporary offices<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1702\" data-end=\"1821\">The building was restored and continued serving as Paterson&#8217;s seat of government.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"1tyxzii\" data-start=\"1823\" data-end=\"1846\">Statues on the Plaza<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1848\" data-end=\"1955\">Three bronze statues stand along the Market Street frontage honoring important figures in Paterson history:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1957\" data-end=\"2227\">\n<li data-section-id=\"1ot8rcj\" data-start=\"1957\" data-end=\"2029\"><strong data-start=\"1959\" data-end=\"1977\">Nathan Barnert<\/strong> \u2013 Industrialist, philanthropist, and two-term mayor<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"csxu26\" data-start=\"2030\" data-end=\"2087\"><strong data-start=\"2032\" data-end=\"2054\">Dr. Andrew McBride<\/strong> \u2013 Three-term mayor and physician<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"utngx3\" data-start=\"2088\" data-end=\"2227\"><strong data-start=\"2090\" data-end=\"2110\">Garret A. Hobart<\/strong> \u2013 Paterson attorney, political leader, and 24th Vice President of the United States under President William McKinley<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2229\" data-end=\"2374\">These monuments were added to commemorate individuals who helped shape the city&#8217;s political and civic life.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"cbocqj\" data-start=\"2376\" data-end=\"2399\">Historic Designation<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2401\" data-end=\"2718\">Paterson City Hall was listed on the <strong data-start=\"2438\" data-end=\"2478\">National Register of Historic Places<\/strong> on <strong data-start=\"2482\" data-end=\"2500\">March 10, 1995<\/strong>, recognizing its architectural and historical significance. Preservation grants have funded restoration of its public spaces, stained glass, entrance doors, and exterior statuary.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"18xvu1b\" data-start=\"2720\" data-end=\"2740\">Earlier City Hall<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2742\" data-end=\"3132\">Before the present building, Paterson&#8217;s first City Hall occupied the former <a href=\"https:\/\/patersonhistory.com\/index.php\/peter-colt-residence\/\"><strong data-start=\"2818\" data-end=\"2842\">Peter Colt residence<\/strong>, built in <strong data-start=\"2853\" data-end=\"2861\">1813<\/strong><\/a>. The city purchased the building in 1869, adding a new ground floor after Washington Street was cut through the property.
