As America&#8217;s first planned industrial city grew during the 19th and early 20th centuries, successive waves of immigrants\u2014Irish, German, Italian, Polish, Slovak, Syrian, Lebanese, Puerto Rican, Dominican, Peruvian, and many others\u2014founded churches that reflected both their faith and their ethnic heritage. Today, Paterson is home to dozens of active Christian congregations representing Roman Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox, Pentecostal, and independent traditions.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"vrovdi\" data-start=\"673\" data-end=\"714\">Major Historic Roman Catholic Churches<\/h2>\n<ul data-start=\"1787\" data-end=\"1960\">\n<li data-section-id=\"k7cigv\" data-start=\"716\" data-end=\"955\"><a played an important role in Paterson&#8217;s civic and social history, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"668\" data-end=\"1257\"><a href=\"https:\/\/patersonhistory.com\/index.php\/first-ame-zion-church\/\"><strong data-start=\"668\" data-end=\"709\"><span class=\"\" data-state=\"closed\"><span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">First AME Zion Church<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/a><br data-start=\"709\" data-end=\"712\" \/>Founded in <strong data-start=\"723\" data-end=\"731\">1834<\/strong>, it is the oldest African-American church in Paterson and Passaic County. Originally known as the Godwin Street AME Zion Church, it established Paterson&#8217;s first African-American school in 1855 and played a leading role in education and civil rights. The present Gothic Revival church at 326 Ellison Street was completed in <strong data-start=\"1055\" data-end=\"1063\">1924<\/strong> after an earlier building was destroyed by fire. The congregation was served by Rev. Benjamin C. Robeson, brother of <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Paul Robeson<\/span><\/span>.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1259\" data-end=\"1616\"><a href=\"https:\/\/patersonhistory.com\/index.php\/calvary-baptist-church\/\"><strong data-start=\"1259\" data-end=\"1300\"><span class=\"\" data-state=\"closed\"><span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Calvary Baptist Church<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/a><br data-start=\"1300\" data-end=\"1303\" \/>Organized in <strong data-start=\"1316\" data-end=\"1324\">1879<\/strong>, Calvary is among Paterson&#8217;s oldest African-American Baptist congregations. Since moving to East 18th Street in 1919, it has become known for its extensive educational, youth, housing, and community programs through the Calvary Baptist Community Center.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1618\" data-end=\"2025\"><a href=\"https:\/\/patersonhistory.com\/index.php\/bethel-ame-church\/\"><strong data-start=\"1618\" data-end=\"1659\"><span class=\"\" data-state=\"closed\"><span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Bethel AME Church<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/a><br data-start=\"1659\" data-end=\"1662\" \/>Originally organized in <strong data-start=\"1686\" data-end=\"1694\">1865<\/strong>, Bethel AME has long served the Auburn Street neighborhood and remains an important historic African Methodist Episcopal congregation in the city.
