Standing on the\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 14px; color: initial;\" data-start=\"149\" data-end=\"202\">northeast corner of Main Street and Market Street<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 14px; color: initial;\">, it served as the city\u2019s leading hotel, gathering place, and business center for several decades before being demolished in the late 1880s to make way for the Paterson Savings Institution building.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<h3 data-section-id=\"1ge0qg7\" data-start=\"440\" data-end=\"457\">Early History<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"459\" data-end=\"879\">Congress Hall was erected during Paterson\u2019s early period of growth, probably in the 1830s or early 1840s. By the 1850s it had become the city\u2019s premier hotel. Its central location at Main and Market Streets placed it at the heart of Paterson\u2019s commercial district, making it the preferred lodging for businessmen, travelers, politicians, and visitors arriving by rail or stagecoach.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"1mjfazm\" data-start=\"881\" data-end=\"909\">Paterson\u2019s Social Center<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"911\" data-end=\"999\">Throughout the mid-19th century, Congress Hall was much more than a hotel. It served as:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1001\" data-end=\"1220\">\n<li data-section-id=\"1iwavue\" data-start=\"1001\" data-end=\"1051\">Headquarters for political meetings and rallies.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"15ed7j\" data-start=\"1052\" data-end=\"1082\">Banquet and convention hall.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1t5blj5\" data-start=\"1083\" data-end=\"1123\">Meeting place for civic organizations.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"wv08xm\" data-start=\"1124\" data-end=\"1157\">Lodging for prominent visitors.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1kzq4ze\" data-start=\"1158\" data-end=\"1220\">A landmark where residents gathered for public celebrations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1222\" data-end=\"1519\">City directories from 1859 list numerous boarders living at Congress Hall, including teachers, merchants, baggage masters, and travelers, illustrating its role as Paterson\u2019s principal hotel. The hotel was operated during this period by\u00a0<strong data-start=\"1458\" data-end=\"1480\">Lorenzo D. Workman<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"to1puj\" data-start=\"1521\" data-end=\"1556\">Home of the First National Bank<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1558\" data-end=\"1632\">Congress Hall also played an important role in Paterson\u2019s banking history.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1634\" data-end=\"2069\">When the\u00a0<span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">First National Bank of Paterson<\/span><\/span>\u00a0outgrew its original quarters, it moved on\u00a0<strong data-start=\"1724\" data-end=\"1744\">February 1, 1866<\/strong>, into part of Congress Hall. The bank remained there while Paterson continued to expand commercially. A history of the bank published for its fiftieth anniversary specifically notes that the bank occupied part of the old Congress Hall at the northeast corner of Main and Market Streets.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"s6z9tu\" data-start=\"2071\" data-end=\"2098\">An Engineering Landmark<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2100\" data-end=\"2153\">Congress Hall even appears in transportation history.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2155\" data-end=\"2537\">On\u00a0<strong data-start=\"2158\" data-end=\"2174\">May 23, 1859<\/strong>, inventor\u00a0<strong data-start=\"2185\" data-end=\"2203\">J. K. Fisher\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0experimental steam road carriage made one of its first public runs through Paterson. During the test it struck an awning post in front of Congress Hall without causing damage, making the hotel one of the landmarks associated with one of America\u2019s earliest successful steam-powered road vehicles.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"dwenb0\" data-start=\"2539\" data-end=\"2553\">Demolition<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2555\" data-end=\"2977\">During the late 1880s, the Paterson Savings Institution purchased the valuable corner property occupied by Congress Hall. Contemporary publications noted that the site was considered\u00a0<strong data-start=\"2738\" data-end=\"2789\">the most valuable commercial corner in Paterson<\/strong>, measuring approximately sixty feet on Main Street by one hundred feet on Market Street, purchased for over\u00a0<strong data-start=\"2898\" data-end=\"2909\">$75,000<\/strong>\u2014a remarkable sum at the time.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2979\" data-end=\"3325\">Congress Hall was demolished, and in its place rose the magnificent\u00a0<strong data-start=\"3047\" data-end=\"3088\">Paterson Savings Institution Building<\/strong>, one of the city\u2019s finest Beaux-Arts commercial buildings. The National Register nomination for Downtown Paterson notes that the Paterson Savings Institution replaced Congress Hall during the 1890s.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"lqnbcj\" data-start=\"3327\" data-end=\"3337\">Legacy<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3339\" data-end=\"3525\">Although no trace of Congress Hall survives today, it occupied one of the most significant intersections in Paterson during the city\u2019s golden age. For nearly half a century it served as:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"3527\" data-end=\"3740\">\n<li data-section-id=\"lqrt6s\" data-start=\"3527\" data-end=\"3554\">Paterson\u2019s leading hotel.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"q040qy\" data-start=\"3555\" data-end=\"3599\">A major civic and political meeting place.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"p9la4y\" data-start=\"3600\" data-end=\"3669\">Home to the First National Bank during a key period in its history.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1spz1qr\" data-start=\"3670\" data-end=\"3740\">A landmark on Main Street recognized throughout northern New Jersey.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"3742\" data-end=\"3972\">Its replacement, the Paterson Savings Institution building, continued the site\u2019s importance as one of downtown Paterson\u2019s architectural and financial landmarks well into the twentieth century.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>00 Comments in moderation New Edit Post Caching WPCode Insights6 WPForms Howdy,\u00a0Richard Walter Search \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Congress Hall\u00a0was one of the most important public buildings in 19th-century Paterson.
