Founded nationally in 1864 by <strong data-start=\"218\" data-end=\"240\">Justus H. Rathbone<\/strong>, the Order promoted the principles of <strong data-start=\"279\" data-end=\"319\">Friendship, Charity, and Benevolence<\/strong>, using the ancient legend of Damon and Pythias as the basis for its ritual. It was the first fraternal organization chartered by an Act of Congress.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"zj5t4g\" data-start=\"508\" data-end=\"527\">Paterson Lodges<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"529\" data-end=\"610\">Paterson was home to several Knights of Pythias lodges over the years, including:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"612\" data-end=\"837\">\n<li data-section-id=\"g3ankz\" data-start=\"612\" data-end=\"793\"><strong data-start=\"614\" data-end=\"637\">Niagara Lodge No. 4<\/strong> \u2013 One of New Jersey&#8217;s earliest lodges, organized shortly after the Grand Lodge of New Jersey was established in 1868.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1liv766\" data-start=\"794\" data-end=\"820\"><strong data-start=\"796\" data-end=\"820\">Fabiola Lodge No. 57<\/strong><\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"m6rw4z\" data-start=\"821\" data-end=\"837\"><strong data-start=\"823\" data-end=\"837\">Zeno Lodge<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"839\" data-end=\"1029\">By the early 1880s, Paterson&#8217;s Pythian membership had grown to approximately <strong data-start=\"916\" data-end=\"931\">500 members<\/strong>, making it one of the city&#8217;s major fraternal organizations.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"1cvv3vd\" data-start=\"1031\" data-end=\"1059\">Contemporary Description<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1061\" data-end=\"1105\">An 1880s history of Passaic County observed:<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"1107\" data-end=\"1340\">\n<p data-start=\"1109\" data-end=\"1340\">&#8220;The Knights of Pythias have been remarkably successful since the organization of their first lodge, Fabiola, No. 57&#8230; They now have a second lodge\u2014Zeno\u2014and number about five hundred members.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"7wacus\" data-start=\"1342\" data-end=\"1356\">Membership<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1358\" data-end=\"1423\">Like many Paterson fraternal organizations, the lodges attracted:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1425\" data-end=\"1540\">\n<li data-section-id=\"3jzt3c\" data-start=\"1425\" data-end=\"1456\">Silk mill owners and managers<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1mi1ve7\" data-start=\"1457\" data-end=\"1476\">Skilled craftsmen<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"kw4ua9\" data-start=\"1477\" data-end=\"1488\">Merchants<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1uzwr54\" data-start=\"1489\" data-end=\"1497\">Clerks<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"n1754g\" data-start=\"1498\" data-end=\"1513\">Professionals<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"15z7ah0\" data-start=\"1514\" data-end=\"1524\">Veterans<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1xuu53q\" data-start=\"1525\" data-end=\"1540\">Civic leaders<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1542\" data-end=\"1654\">Meetings combined ritual work with charitable projects, social events, lectures, banquets, and funeral benefits.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-section-id=\"6mh45w\" data-start=\"1656\" data-end=\"1672\">Uniform Rank<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1674\" data-end=\"2045\">Many Paterson Pythians belonged to the <strong data-start=\"1713\" data-end=\"1729\">Uniform Rank<\/strong>, a military-style drill corps that marched in parades, attended conventions, and appeared at civic celebrations wearing elaborate uniforms, helmets, swords, and plumed caps. These ceremonial swords are common antiques today and often bear the owner&#8217;s name or lodge information.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"fe7w1y\" data-start=\"2047\" data-end=\"2066\">Lodge Buildings<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2068\" data-end=\"2477\">Unlike the Elks or Masons, the Knights of Pythias often rented meeting halls before eventually acquiring or constructing their own buildings. Paterson lodges met in several downtown halls during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Additional research in city directories and Sanborn Fire Insurance maps should make it possible to identify every meeting location and any dedicated Pythian halls.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"1df96ui\" data-start=\"2479\" data-end=\"2490\">Decline<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2492\" data-end=\"2740\">As with many fraternal organizations, membership declined after World War II because of changing social habits, suburbanization, and the rise of other civic organizations.
