After learning advanced silk dyeing techniques in Switzerland, Germany, and France, he immigrated to the United States in <strong data-start=\"395\" data-end=\"403\">1867<\/strong>. He first worked for Cheney Brothers in Connecticut before moving to <strong data-start=\"473\" data-end=\"493\">Paterson in 1872<\/strong>, where he established his own silk dyeing business.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"bb1226\" data-start=\"585\" data-end=\"621\">The Weidmann Silk Dyeing Company<\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"623\" data-end=\"1011\">\n<li data-section-id=\"5s7wjn\" data-start=\"623\" data-end=\"688\">Opened his first dye works at <strong data-start=\"655\" data-end=\"687\">Paterson and Ellison Streets<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1nydzzd\" data-start=\"689\" data-end=\"753\">Incorporated the <strong data-start=\"708\" data-end=\"740\">Weidmann Silk Dyeing Company<\/strong> in <strong data-start=\"744\" data-end=\"752\">1881<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"2cq70h\" data-start=\"754\" data-end=\"839\">Future U.S. Vice President <strong data-start=\"783\" data-end=\"803\">Garret A. Hobart<\/strong> was one of the company&#8217;s directors.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1eik1a7\" data-start=\"840\" data-end=\"1011\">Specialized in high-quality black weighted silk and introduced many new European dyeing technologies to the American silk industry.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"74vy79\" data-start=\"1013\" data-end=\"1039\">Expansion to Riverside<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1041\" data-end=\"1177\">After a fire destroyed another dye works in Riverside, Weidmann purchased the property and moved his entire operation there in <strong data-start=\"1168\" data-end=\"1176\">1887<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1179\" data-end=\"1193\">The new plant:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1194\" data-end=\"1557\">\n<li data-section-id=\"10sd3ki\" data-start=\"1194\" data-end=\"1231\">Occupied a vast industrial complex.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"a8ypww\" data-start=\"1232\" data-end=\"1266\">Included its own chemical works.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"dozmuz\" data-start=\"1267\" data-end=\"1310\">Had private tunnels beneath the railroad.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1j1d3ku\" data-start=\"1311\" data-end=\"1402\">Used artesian wells and a dedicated water supply from the Passaic River and Goffle Brook.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"uzyj2i\" data-start=\"1403\" data-end=\"1557\">Eventually employed <strong data-start=\"1425\" data-end=\"1448\">about 3,000 workers<\/strong>, making it one of the largest silk dyeing plants in the United States.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"1a8n2ze\" data-start=\"1559\" data-end=\"1592\">The 1913 Paterson Silk Strike<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1594\" data-end=\"1941\">Although Jacob Weidmann died in <strong data-start=\"1626\" data-end=\"1634\">1911<\/strong> while on a fishing trip in Canada, his company became one of the principal employers involved in the famous <strong data-start=\"1743\" data-end=\"1772\">1913 Paterson Silk Strike<\/strong>. The company&#8217;s dye-house workers played a significant role in the labor movement led by the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW).<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"16lg27t\" data-start=\"1943\" data-end=\"1969\">After Weidmann&#8217;s Death<\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"1971\" data-end=\"2346\">\n<li data-section-id=\"1fd48r6\" data-start=\"1971\" data-end=\"2075\">In <strong data-start=\"1976\" data-end=\"1984\">1909<\/strong>, Weidmann sold a controlling interest in the company to a French firm, <strong data-start=\"2056\" data-end=\"2074\">Gillet et Fils<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"dweyko\" data-start=\"2076\" data-end=\"2098\">He died in <strong data-start=\"2089\" data-end=\"2097\">1911<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"qzqua3\" data-start=\"2099\" data-end=\"2164\">The company was sold to <strong data-start=\"2125\" data-end=\"2151\">United Piece Dye Works<\/strong> in <strong data-start=\"2155\" data-end=\"2163\">1923<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"obrszc\" data-start=\"2165\" data-end=\"2346\">Much of the historic industrial complex still survives today and is recognized as one of Paterson&#8217;s most significant silk industry landmarks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jacob Weidmann (1845\u20131911) Jacob Weidmann was born in Switzerland in 1845.
