Organized to serve the city&#8217;s rapidly growing Italian immigrant community, it combined fraternal fellowship with mutual aid, sickness and death benefits, and community service.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-section-id=\"nnxz19\" data-start=\"430\" data-end=\"446\">Organization<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"448\" data-end=\"720\">Court Cavour No. 133 was established during the late 1890s or early 1900s, when thousands of Italian immigrants settled in Paterson to work in the silk mills, textile factories, construction trades, and other industries. Like many ethnic lodges of the period, it provided:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"722\" data-end=\"957\">\n<li data-section-id=\"1wix476\" data-start=\"722\" data-end=\"756\">Sickness and disability benefits<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1tfr5pb\" data-start=\"757\" data-end=\"795\">Death benefits for members&#8217; families<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1wrfbjd\" data-start=\"796\" data-end=\"816\">Funeral assistance<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"12lj5xz\" data-start=\"817\" data-end=\"849\">Social and cultural activities<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"pfwe0u\" data-start=\"850\" data-end=\"890\">Assistance to newly arrived immigrants<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"16cvlt7\" data-start=\"891\" data-end=\"957\">Patriotic celebrations honoring both Italy and the United States<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"959\" data-end=\"1210\">The court was named in honor of <strong data-start=\"991\" data-end=\"1032\"><span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Camillo Benso, Count of Cavour<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, the principal statesman behind the unification of Italy during the nineteenth century. His name was widely used by Italian-American organizations as a symbol of national pride.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"1wf19h3\" data-start=\"1212\" data-end=\"1259\">Italian-American Fraternal Life in Paterson<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1261\" data-end=\"1509\">During the early 1900s, Paterson had one of New Jersey&#8217;s largest Italian populations. Before modern insurance and government assistance programs existed, organizations such as Court Cavour offered members financial security during illness or death.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1511\" data-end=\"1545\">Court meetings typically included:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1547\" data-end=\"1692\">\n<li data-section-id=\"7zkp3x\" data-start=\"1547\" data-end=\"1566\">Ritual ceremonies<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1dh7ws3\" data-start=\"1567\" data-end=\"1589\">Election of officers<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1es08ye\" data-start=\"1590\" data-end=\"1608\">Benefit payments<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1yc88y9\" data-start=\"1609\" data-end=\"1630\">Charity collections<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1vpdd9y\" data-start=\"1631\" data-end=\"1652\">Banquets and dances<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"cz77w3\" data-start=\"1653\" data-end=\"1669\">Family picnics<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1dn93ch\" data-start=\"1670\" data-end=\"1692\">Memorial observances<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1694\" data-end=\"1813\">The court also participated in city parades and civic events, helping strengthen Paterson&#8217;s Italian-American community.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"111hzi7\" data-start=\"1815\" data-end=\"1838\">Landmark Court Case<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1840\" data-end=\"1913\">Court Cavour became famous because of the New Jersey Chancery Court case:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1915\" data-end=\"2094\"><strong data-start=\"1915\" data-end=\"1978\">Grand Court of Foresters of America v. Court Cavour No. 133<\/strong> (1913), later affirmed by the New Jersey Court of Errors and Appeals in 1914.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2096\" data-end=\"2242\">The dispute arose when members of Court Cavour attempted to withdraw from the Foresters of America while retaining the court&#8217;s funds and property.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2244\" data-end=\"2272\">The Grand Court argued that:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2274\" data-end=\"2424\">\n<li data-section-id=\"1o8nac3\" data-start=\"2274\" data-end=\"2352\">The subordinate court held its money in trust for the purposes of the Order.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1ylrtv8\" data-start=\"2353\" data-end=\"2424\">Members could not dissolve the court and divide or remove its assets.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2426\" data-end=\"2776\">The New Jersey courts agreed, ruling that the property belonged to the Order under its constitution and bylaws rather than to the withdrawing members. The decision became an important legal precedent governing the property rights of fraternal benefit societies and was later cited in subsequent New Jersey cases.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"de0ac2\" data-start=\"2778\" data-end=\"2792\">Importance<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2794\" data-end=\"3112\">Court Cavour No. 133 illustrates the important role fraternal organizations played among immigrant communities before the development of Social Security, unemployment insurance, and employer-sponsored health benefits.
