Improved Order of Red Men (I.O.R.M.)<\/h4>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The Improved Order of Red Men (I.O.R.M.)<\/strong> was once one of the largest fraternal organizations in Paterson, New Jersey, during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Like the Masons, Odd Fellows, Elks, and Knights of Pythias, the Red Men provided fellowship, charitable assistance, sickness and death benefits, and patriotic activities for working-class men. Although records of individual Paterson tribes are scattered, newspapers, city directories, and state proceedings confirm that the organization maintained an active presence in the city for many decades.<\/p>\n

Origins of the Order<\/h3>\n

The Improved Order of Red Men traces its lineage to the patriotic societies of the American Revolution, particularly the Sons of Liberty. Organized in its modern form in Baltimore in 1834, the fraternity adopted terminology and ceremonial customs inspired by what its founders believed were Native American traditions. Local lodges were called Tribes<\/strong>, meeting halls were known as Wigwams<\/strong>, and officers held titles such as Sachem<\/strong>, Senior Sagamore<\/strong>, and Prophet<\/strong>. Today, historians generally regard these practices as cultural appropriation rather than authentic Native traditions.<\/p>\n

The Red Men in Paterson<\/h3>\n

By the 1880s, Paterson had become one of New Jersey’s leading industrial cities, with thousands of workers employed in the silk, locomotive, textile, and machine industries.
