Lambert Castle, originally known as Belle Vista<\/strong>, is one of Paterson’s most recognizable landmarks and among New Jersey’s finest examples of Medieval Revival<\/strong> residential architecture. Built between 1892 and 1893<\/strong> by silk manufacturer Catholina Lambert<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/a>, the castle symbolizes the immense wealth created by Paterson’s silk industry during the city’s “Silk City” era. Today it serves as a museum and historical center within the Garret Mountain Reservation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Catholina Lambert<\/a>: From English Mill Boy to Silk Magnate<\/h2>\n

Catholina Lambert was born in Yorkshire, England<\/strong>, in 1834. At the age of ten he began working in a textile mill. After saving enough money, he immigrated to the United States in 1851<\/strong>, arriving in Boston.<\/p>\n

Lambert quickly demonstrated remarkable business ability. After working in Boston’s growing silk industry, he became a partner in a silk manufacturing company. During the 1860s he moved operations to Paterson, where abundant water power, skilled workers, and transportation made the city America’s leading silk-producing center.<\/p>\n

By the late nineteenth century Lambert had become one of Paterson’s wealthiest industrialists. He served as president of the Silk Association of America and headed numerous financial and civic organizations.<\/p>\n

Building “Belle Vista”<\/h2>\n

In the 1880s Lambert began purchasing land on the eastern slope of Garret Mountain. Over several years he assembled approximately 53 acres<\/strong> overlooking Paterson and the Passaic Valley.<\/p>\n

Construction of his dream home began in 1892<\/strong>. Lambert personally helped design the residence with his brother-in-law John C. Ryle<\/strong>, drawing inspiration from the medieval castles of England that he remembered from childhood. The house was built from locally quarried sandstone and granite, giving it the appearance of an ancient fortress.<\/p>\n
