The 1913 Paterson Silk Strike<\/h1>\n

The Paterson Silk Strike of 1913<\/strong> was one of the most important labor disputes in American history. Lasting nearly six months, from February 25 to July 28, 1913<\/strong>, it involved approximately 20,000\u201325,000 silk workers<\/strong> employed in nearly 300 silk mills and dye houses<\/strong> throughout Paterson, New Jersey. Although the strike ultimately ended in defeat for the workers, it became a landmark event in the American labor movement and helped shape later struggles for better working conditions and shorter workdays.<\/p>\n

Background<\/h2>\n

By 1913, Paterson was known worldwide as “Silk City.”<\/strong> More than half of the city’s workforce depended directly or indirectly on the silk industry. Workers came from dozens of nationalities, including Italians, Jews, Germans, Irish, Poles, Hungarians, and other immigrants, making Paterson one of the nation’s most diverse industrial cities.<\/p>\n

The immediate cause of the strike was the introduction of the “four-loom system.”<\/strong> Traditionally, a weaver operated two looms. New automatic machinery allowed manufacturers to require workers to tend four looms simultaneously without a corresponding increase in wages.<\/p>\n
