An English immigrant who rose from humble beginnings, he became one of America&#8217;s leading silk manufacturers and helped establish Paterson as the nation&#8217;s premier <strong data-start=\"325\" data-end=\"341\">&#8220;Silk City.&#8221;<\/strong> He is best remembered today as the builder of <strong data-start=\"388\" data-end=\"420\">Lambert Castle (Belle Vista)<\/strong> on Garret Mountain.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"8wlceb\" data-start=\"480\" data-end=\"494\">Early Life<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"496\" data-end=\"830\">Catholina Lambert was born on <strong data-start=\"526\" data-end=\"544\">March 28, 1834<\/strong>, in Yorkshire, England. At the age of ten, he began working as an errand boy in a cotton mill, where he earned only a few shillings a week. Determined to improve his prospects, he emigrated to the United States in <strong data-start=\"759\" data-end=\"767\">1851<\/strong> at the age of seventeen.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"832\" data-end=\"1117\">He found work in Boston with the silk manufacturing firm of <strong data-start=\"892\" data-end=\"909\">Tilt &amp; Dexter<\/strong>. His talent for business quickly became apparent. His extensive collection of paintings, sculptures, porcelain, and antiques had outgrown his previous residence, so he commissioned a grand estate overlooking Paterson.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2084\" data-end=\"2197\">Construction began in <strong data-start=\"2106\" data-end=\"2114\">1892<\/strong> on what he named <strong data-start=\"2132\" data-end=\"2147\">Belle Vista<\/strong> (&#8220;Beautiful View&#8221;) in honor of his wife Isabella.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2199\" data-end=\"2230\">The estate eventually included:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2232\" data-end=\"2396\">\n<li data-section-id=\"1dp9a7h\" data-start=\"2232\" data-end=\"2270\">A four-story Medieval Revival castle<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"h1374p\" data-start=\"2271\" data-end=\"2298\">A magnificent art gallery<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"h6iqgm\" data-start=\"2299\" data-end=\"2313\">A greenhouse<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1qdxm57\" data-start=\"2314\" data-end=\"2330\">Formal gardens<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"6emnxt\" data-start=\"2331\" data-end=\"2359\">Stables and carriage house<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1de8xgv\" data-start=\"2360\" data-end=\"2396\">A 70-foot observation tower (1896)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2398\" data-end=\"2594\">President <strong data-start=\"2408\" data-end=\"2428\">William McKinley<\/strong> visited the castle in 1898 and reportedly called it <strong data-start=\"2481\" data-end=\"2508\">&#8220;The Louvre of America&#8221;<\/strong> because of Lambert&#8217;s remarkable art collection.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"1xb28si\" data-start=\"2596\" data-end=\"2613\">Art Collector<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2615\" data-end=\"2693\">Lambert was one of America&#8217;s leading private collectors during the Gilded Age.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2695\" data-end=\"2719\">His collection included:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2721\" data-end=\"2848\">\n<li data-section-id=\"i5jmuv\" data-start=\"2721\" data-end=\"2743\">European Old Masters<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1p1urzb\" data-start=\"2744\" data-end=\"2764\">American paintings<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1vnnklb\" data-start=\"2765\" data-end=\"2788\">Renaissance sculpture<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"ayfc1x\" data-start=\"2789\" data-end=\"2809\">Chinese porcelains<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"2383gd\" data-start=\"2810\" data-end=\"2825\">Oriental rugs<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"5yz1vh\" data-start=\"2826\" data-end=\"2848\">Medieval furnishings<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2850\" data-end=\"2963\">Much of the collection was displayed in the castle&#8217;s purpose-built gallery.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"mdexwa\" data-start=\"2965\" data-end=\"2989\">The 1913 Silk Strike<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2991\" data-end=\"3089\">Lambert became one of the principal mill owners opposing the famous <strong data-start=\"3059\" data-end=\"3088\">1913 Paterson Silk Strike<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3091\" data-end=\"3386\">He firmly rejected negotiations with the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) and strongly opposed granting workers&#8217; demands for shorter hours and better wages. His uncompromising stance made him one of the strike&#8217;s most prominent employer representatives.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"15h7e9v\" data-start=\"3388\" data-end=\"3409\">Financial Decline<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3411\" data-end=\"3508\">Although immensely wealthy, Lambert invested heavily in both his business and his art collection.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3510\" data-end=\"3555\">Several events severely affected his fortune:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"3557\" data-end=\"3723\">\n<li data-section-id=\"1av3ws4\" data-start=\"3557\" data-end=\"3579\">The 1913 Silk Strike<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1nvfnqa\" data-start=\"3580\" data-end=\"3626\">Declining profitability of the silk industry<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1svkyhr\" data-start=\"3627\" data-end=\"3662\">Disruptions caused by World War I<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1raj0y6\" data-start=\"3663\" data-end=\"3723\">Financial obligations connected with Dexter, Lambert &amp; Co.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"3725\" data-end=\"3892\">In <strong data-start=\"3728\" data-end=\"3736\">1916<\/strong>, he was forced to auction much of his renowned art collection, which sold for only a fraction of its estimated value.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"6yj8oq\" data-start=\"3894\" data-end=\"3903\">Death<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3905\" data-end=\"3989\">Catholina Lambert died at Lambert Castle on <strong data-start=\"3949\" data-end=\"3970\">February 15, 1923<\/strong>, at the age of 88.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3991\" data-end=\"4007\">After his death:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"4009\" data-end=\"4297\">\n<li data-section-id=\"1yv2uv1\" data-start=\"4009\" data-end=\"4038\">His family sold the estate.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"svu4b7\" data-start=\"4039\" data-end=\"4084\">The City of Paterson acquired the property.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"v91vsj\" data-start=\"4085\" data-end=\"4126\">Passaic County later assumed ownership.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"5hekg2\" data-start=\"4127\" data-end=\"4297\">The castle became home to the Passaic County Historical Society and remains one of North Jersey&#8217;s best-known historic landmarks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"lqnbcj\" data-start=\"4299\" data-end=\"4309\">Legacy<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"4311\" data-end=\"4373\">Catholina Lambert&#8217;s influence on Paterson remains significant:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"4375\" data-end=\"4776\">\n<li data-section-id=\"kyxs6s\" data-start=\"4375\" data-end=\"4447\">Helped make Paterson one of the world&#8217;s leading silk-producing cities.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"ywsn5b\" data-start=\"4448\" data-end=\"4497\">Created thousands of jobs in the silk industry.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1x0ceyc\" data-start=\"4498\" data-end=\"4563\">Built one of New Jersey&#8217;s most distinctive historic residences.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1k93x3g\" data-start=\"4564\" data-end=\"4636\">Assembled one of the finest private art collections of the Gilded Age.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"e5ma5z\" data-start=\"4637\" data-end=\"4776\">Left a landmark that continues to serve as a museum and symbol of Paterson&#8217;s industrial heritage.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"4778\" data-end=\"5057\">In 2026, Passaic County completed a major restoration and reopened <strong data-start=\"4845\" data-end=\"4862\">Lambert Tower<\/strong>, the 70-foot observation tower that Lambert built in 1896, allowing visitors once again to enjoy panoramic views over Paterson and the surrounding region.<\/p>\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Catholina Lambert (1834\u20131923) was one of the most influential industrialists in the history of Paterson, New Jersey.
