Although the Botto House<\/strong> is located in neighboring Haledon, New Jersey<\/strong>, it is inseparably connected with the history of Paterson<\/strong>. During the 1913 Paterson Silk Strike<\/strong>, it became the headquarters and principal gathering place for approximately 25,000 striking silk workers<\/strong>, making it one of the most important labor history sites in the United States.<\/p>\n

The House<\/h2>\n

The Pietro and Maria Botto House was built in 1908<\/strong> by Italian immigrants Pietro and Maria Botto<\/strong> at 83 Norwood Street, Haledon<\/strong>. Pietro was a silk weaver employed in Paterson’s mills, while Maria worked as a silk inspector and supplemented the family’s income by cooking meals for boarders and visitors. Like many immigrant families, the Bottos depended on multiple sources of income to achieve homeownership.<\/p>\n

Why It Became Important<\/h2>\n

When the Paterson Silk Strike erupted in February 1913, city officials in Paterson frequently prohibited or disrupted labor meetings. Haledon’s Socialist mayor, William Brueckmann<\/strong>, welcomed the strikers and permitted them to gather there instead.<\/p>\n

Pietro Botto offered his home as a meeting place, and the second-floor balcony became the platform from which labor leaders addressed enormous crowds assembled in the surrounding fields. Thousands of workers marched from Paterson to Haledon every Sunday to hear speeches and maintain solidarity during the five-month strike.<\/p>\n
