The Peter Colt Residence<\/strong>, completed in 1813<\/strong>, was one of the most important early homes in Paterson, New Jersey. Built for Peter Colt (1744\u20131824)<\/strong>, superintendent of the Society for Establishing Useful Manufactures<\/span><\/span> (S.U.M.), it served as both his family home and a landmark overlooking the young industrial village.<\/p>\n

Construction and Architecture<\/h3>\n

Peter Colt began construction around 1811<\/strong>, moving into the completed residence on July 4, 1813<\/strong>. The house occupied the crest of a hill bounded today by Main, Church, Ellison, and Washington Streets<\/strong>. At the time it commanded sweeping views over Paterson and the Passaic Valley.<\/p>\n

One of the home’s most unusual features was its construction materials. Much of the dressed brownstone used for the west and south walls came from the ruins of the S.U.M.’s massive four-story stone cotton mill, which had burned in 1808. The remaining walls were built of local fieldstone.<\/p>\n
