Built for <strong data-start=\"132\" data-end=\"158\">Peter Colt (1744\u20131824)<\/strong>, superintendent of the <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Society for Establishing Useful Manufactures<\/span><\/span> (S.U.M.), it served as both his family home and a landmark overlooking the young industrial village.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"y23shx\" data-start=\"322\" data-end=\"355\">Construction and Architecture<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"357\" data-end=\"683\">Peter Colt began construction around <strong data-start=\"394\" data-end=\"402\">1811<\/strong>, moving into the completed residence on <strong data-start=\"443\" data-end=\"459\">July 4, 1813<\/strong>. The house occupied the crest of a hill bounded today by <strong data-start=\"517\" data-end=\"566\">Main, Church, Ellison, and Washington Streets<\/strong>. At the time it commanded sweeping views over Paterson and the Passaic Valley.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"685\" data-end=\"1011\">One of the home&#8217;s most unusual features was its construction materials. Much of the dressed brownstone used for the west and south walls came from the ruins of the S.U.M.&#8217;s massive four-story stone cotton mill, which had burned in 1808. The remaining walls were built of local fieldstone.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1013\" data-end=\"1035\">The property included:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1037\" data-end=\"1282\">\n<li data-section-id=\"uijndq\" data-start=\"1037\" data-end=\"1085\">A broad sloping lawn extending to Main Street.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"deulfu\" data-start=\"1086\" data-end=\"1138\">Formal gardens stretching nearly to Church Street.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"gwdqdo\" data-start=\"1139\" data-end=\"1187\">Orchards, shrubs, vegetables, and shade trees.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1vuv8eh\" data-start=\"1188\" data-end=\"1282\">A carriage drive leading up the hill to the residence.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1284\" data-end=\"1363\">At the time, it was widely regarded as <strong data-start=\"1323\" data-end=\"1362\">Paterson&#8217;s finest private residence<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"1j4pkzj\" data-start=\"1365\" data-end=\"1386\">Peter Colt&#8217;s Home<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1388\" data-end=\"1611\">Peter Colt was already nearly 70 years old when he moved into the mansion. Although officially retired from the day-to-day management of the S.U.M., he remained active supervising improvements and advising the organization.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1613\" data-end=\"1847\">His son <strong data-start=\"1621\" data-end=\"1634\">John Colt<\/strong> and daughter-in-law <strong data-start=\"1655\" data-end=\"1682\">Elizabeth Boudinot Colt<\/strong> also lived there after their marriage in 1814, making the mansion the center of one of Paterson&#8217;s leading industrial families.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1849\" data-end=\"1952\">Peter Colt died in the house in <strong data-start=\"1881\" data-end=\"1895\">March 1824<\/strong>, at the age of 80.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"gcmyiq\" data-start=\"1954\" data-end=\"2000\">Conversion into Paterson&#8217;s First City Hall<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2002\" data-end=\"2134\">In <strong data-start=\"2005\" data-end=\"2013\">1869<\/strong>, the City of Paterson purchased the Colt residence for municipal use after plans for a new civic complex were abandoned.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2136\" data-end=\"2155\">To adapt the house:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2157\" data-end=\"2543\">\n<li data-section-id=\"b015bv\" data-start=\"2157\" data-end=\"2227\">Washington Street was cut through the hill in front of the building.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"t2za7l\" data-start=\"2228\" data-end=\"2392\">Because the excavation left the original first floor elevated above street level, <strong data-start=\"2312\" data-end=\"2391\">an entirely new ground floor was constructed beneath the original structure<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"gyus52\" data-start=\"2393\" data-end=\"2543\">The former front entrance became the second-story entrance, a feature clearly visible in historic photographs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2545\" data-end=\"2656\">The building served as <strong data-start=\"2568\" data-end=\"2598\">Paterson&#8217;s first City Hall<\/strong> until the present City Hall was constructed in the 1890s.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"czgyyg\" data-start=\"2658\" data-end=\"2673\">Destruction<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2675\" data-end=\"2840\">The former Colt residence was destroyed during <strong data-start=\"2722\" data-end=\"2755\">Paterson&#8217;s Great Fire of 1902<\/strong>, ending nearly ninety years of continuous use.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"lspeud\" data-start=\"2842\" data-end=\"2869\">Historical Significance<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2871\" data-end=\"2923\">The Peter Colt Residence was significant because it:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2925\" data-end=\"3355\">\n<li data-section-id=\"v1ps0x\" data-start=\"2925\" data-end=\"2987\">Was one of the earliest and grandest residences in Paterson.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"gjvrvu\" data-start=\"2988\" data-end=\"3101\">Reflected the leadership of Peter Colt in developing the S.U.M. and the nation&#8217;s first planned industrial city.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1loyb0h\" data-start=\"3102\" data-end=\"3176\">Demonstrated the reuse of stone from Paterson&#8217;s first large cotton mill.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1pq97v3\" data-start=\"3177\" data-end=\"3237\">Served as Paterson&#8217;s first City Hall for over two decades.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1v2ca9o\" data-start=\"3238\" data-end=\"3355\">Occupied a prominent site in the city&#8217;s early civic and industrial landscape.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"3357\" data-end=\"3537\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">The house stood on or near the site later occupied by the old police headquarters, adjacent to today&#8217;s City Hall complex, making it a cornerstone of Paterson&#8217;s early civic history.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; The Peter Colt Residence, completed in 1813, was one of the most important early homes in Paterson, New Jersey.
