Founded by German Franciscan friars in <strong data-start=\"314\" data-end=\"322\">1876<\/strong>, it became a parish in <strong data-start=\"346\" data-end=\"354\">1877<\/strong> and has served generations of immigrants in the city&#8217;s Stony Road neighborhood.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"amy44h\" data-start=\"474\" data-end=\"485\">Origins<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"487\" data-end=\"907\">The parish traces its beginnings to six Franciscan friars who were expelled from Prussia during Otto von Bismarck&#8217;s anti-Catholic <em data-start=\"617\" data-end=\"630\">Kulturkampf<\/em>. After arriving in the United States, they were invited by Bishop Michael Corrigan of Newark to settle in Paterson. They took over an unfinished Carmelite monastery on Ramsey Street and soon established what became St. Bonaventure Parish.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"1ljwnn0\" data-start=\"909\" data-end=\"939\">Construction of the Church<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"941\" data-end=\"1309\">Construction of the permanent church began in <strong data-start=\"987\" data-end=\"995\">1878<\/strong>. Bishop Corrigan laid the cornerstone on <strong data-start=\"1037\" data-end=\"1058\">November 24, 1878<\/strong>, and the completed church was solemnly consecrated on <strong data-start=\"1113\" data-end=\"1129\">July 4, 1880<\/strong>. Built at a cost of approximately <strong data-start=\"1164\" data-end=\"1175\">$30,000<\/strong>, it was dedicated free of debt\u2014a source of great pride for the parish and the Franciscan Order.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"2ugtf\" data-start=\"1311\" data-end=\"1332\">Franciscan Center<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1334\" data-end=\"1413\">For many years St. Bonaventure was far more than a parish church. It served as:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1415\" data-end=\"1750\">\n<li data-section-id=\"4f9hwi\" data-start=\"1415\" data-end=\"1482\">The headquarters of the Franciscan Holy Name Province until 1910.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"gexet7\" data-start=\"1483\" data-end=\"1553\">A novitiate where thousands of young men began Franciscan formation.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"nzdad2\" data-start=\"1554\" data-end=\"1583\">A minor and major seminary.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"awocn6\" data-start=\"1584\" data-end=\"1602\">A retreat house.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"oaad23\" data-start=\"1603\" data-end=\"1750\">A center from which Franciscan missionaries departed for China, Japan, Brazil, Mexico, and other countries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1752\" data-end=\"1933\">The adjoining monastery became one of the most important Franciscan institutions in the eastern United States before it was demolished in 1985.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"185r4q6\" data-start=\"1935\" data-end=\"1961\">School and Parish Life<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1963\" data-end=\"2313\">The parish opened <strong data-start=\"1981\" data-end=\"2007\">St. Bonaventure School<\/strong> in <strong data-start=\"2011\" data-end=\"2019\">1879<\/strong>, which educated generations of Paterson children for more than a century. A <strong data-start=\"2096\" data-end=\"2111\">high school<\/strong> opened in <strong data-start=\"2122\" data-end=\"2130\">1928<\/strong> and operated until <strong data-start=\"2150\" data-end=\"2158\">1967<\/strong>. The parish was also known for its lyceum, parish societies, youth organizations, and extensive charitable outreach.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"1u244tv\" data-start=\"2315\" data-end=\"2331\">Architecture<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2333\" data-end=\"2463\">The church is a substantial nineteenth-century brick structure reflecting Romanesque Revival influences. Notable features include:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2465\" data-end=\"2662\">\n<li data-section-id=\"4ysecc\" data-start=\"2465\" data-end=\"2491\">A commanding bell tower.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1m0gmrz\" data-start=\"2492\" data-end=\"2515\">Round-arched windows.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"ny1uy7\" data-start=\"2516\" data-end=\"2550\">Beautiful stained-glass windows.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1ep071m\" data-start=\"2551\" data-end=\"2621\">A spacious sanctuary with traditional Franciscan devotional artwork.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"prwn10\" data-start=\"2622\" data-end=\"2662\">A prominent statue of St. Bonaventure.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2664\" data-end=\"2725\">The church remains one of Paterson&#8217;s architectural landmarks.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"1j59ir9\" data-start=\"2727\" data-end=\"2748\">A Changing Parish<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2750\" data-end=\"3079\">Originally founded to serve German-speaking Catholics, the congregation gradually welcomed Irish, Italian, Polish, and later Hispanic families. Today the parish continues its Franciscan tradition while serving a multicultural community with Masses and ministries in both English and Spanish.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"14vkbyb\" data-start=\"3081\" data-end=\"3101\">Padre Pio Parish<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3103\" data-end=\"3340\">In recent years, St. Bonaventure Church and Our Lady of Pompei Church were united to form <strong data-start=\"3193\" data-end=\"3213\">Padre Pio Parish<\/strong>, preserving both historic church buildings while operating as a single parish community.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"lspeud\" data-start=\"3342\" data-end=\"3369\">Historical Significance<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3371\" data-end=\"3408\">St. Bonaventure is notable for being:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"3410\" data-end=\"3764\">\n<li data-section-id=\"o4mt56\" data-start=\"3410\" data-end=\"3455\">One of Paterson&#8217;s oldest Catholic parishes.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"q9tlaf\" data-start=\"3456\" data-end=\"3502\">The first Franciscan foundation in Paterson.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1485484\" data-start=\"3503\" data-end=\"3589\">The birthplace of numerous Franciscan missions throughout the eastern United States.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1f3rxf9\" data-start=\"3590\" data-end=\"3648\">A major center of Catholic education for over a century.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"93x14m\" data-start=\"3649\" data-end=\"3764\">An enduring landmark of Paterson&#8217;s German-American and Franciscan heritage.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>174 Ramsey Street, Paterson, New Jersey St. Bonaventure Church is one of Paterson&#8217;s oldest Roman Catholic parishes and one of the most historically significant Franciscan churches in the United States.
