Located at <strong data-start=\"280\" data-end=\"296\">422 Broadway<\/strong> at East 18th Street, it serves as an Episcopal parish in the Diocese of Newark and has been a center of worship and community service since <strong data-start=\"437\" data-end=\"445\">1817<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"1ge0qg7\" data-start=\"486\" data-end=\"503\">Early History<\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"504\" data-end=\"1068\">\n<li data-section-id=\"ydqp6x\" data-start=\"504\" data-end=\"620\">The Episcopal congregation in Paterson was organized in <strong data-start=\"562\" data-end=\"570\">1817<\/strong>, only a few years after the founding of the city.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"on5er4\" data-start=\"621\" data-end=\"740\">The first services were held in borrowed locations, including the Old Dutch Reformed Church and the Paterson Academy.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1d37v5b\" data-start=\"741\" data-end=\"839\">The parish was officially incorporated as <strong data-start=\"785\" data-end=\"816\">St. Paul&#8217;s Episcopal Church<\/strong> on <strong data-start=\"820\" data-end=\"838\">April 29, 1825<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1r2syn7\" data-start=\"840\" data-end=\"1068\">The first church, a wooden Gothic-style building, was erected on Hamilton Square after land was donated by <strong data-start=\"949\" data-end=\"968\">Roswell L. Colt<\/strong> of the Society for Establishing Useful Manufactures (S.U.M.).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"odo3sk\" data-start=\"1070\" data-end=\"1093\">Fire and Rebuilding<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1094\" data-end=\"1286\">The original church was destroyed in the great fire of <strong data-start=\"1149\" data-end=\"1166\">June 26, 1848<\/strong>, which swept through downtown Paterson. Parishioner <strong data-start=\"1219\" data-end=\"1238\">Robert Johnston<\/strong> died while attempting to save the church organ.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1288\" data-end=\"1474\">A replacement brownstone Gothic church, designed by architect <strong data-start=\"1350\" data-end=\"1365\">Frank Wills<\/strong>, was completed and consecrated in <strong data-start=\"1400\" data-end=\"1408\">1851<\/strong> on the original foundation.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"pd9bxm\" data-start=\"1476\" data-end=\"1494\">Present Church<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1495\" data-end=\"1616\">The current church was built after the city purchased the old downtown property for construction of Paterson&#8217;s City Hall.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1618\" data-end=\"1650\">Construction highlights include:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1652\" data-end=\"2052\">\n<li data-section-id=\"ynvvij\" data-start=\"1652\" data-end=\"1677\"><strong data-start=\"1654\" data-end=\"1672\">Ground broken:<\/strong> 1893<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1yu9txm\" data-start=\"1678\" data-end=\"1714\"><strong data-start=\"1680\" data-end=\"1701\">Cornerstone laid:<\/strong> May 11, 1895<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"14y183w\" data-start=\"1715\" data-end=\"1748\"><strong data-start=\"1717\" data-end=\"1735\">First service:<\/strong> May 25, 1897<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1ylu9my\" data-start=\"1749\" data-end=\"1799\"><strong data-start=\"1751\" data-end=\"1765\">Architect:<\/strong> <strong data-start=\"1766\" data-end=\"1789\">William Halsey Wood<\/strong> of Newark<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1sad7ja\" data-start=\"1800\" data-end=\"1845\">Inspired by <strong data-start=\"1814\" data-end=\"1834\">Durham Cathedral<\/strong> in England<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1vdpgmz\" data-start=\"1846\" data-end=\"1884\">Romanesque and Norman Revival design<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1h6wp2j\" data-start=\"1885\" data-end=\"1916\">Pink Pompton granite exterior<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"6rchc7\" data-start=\"1917\" data-end=\"1955\">Tower approximately <strong data-start=\"1939\" data-end=\"1950\">94 feet<\/strong> high<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1qi0pn0\" data-start=\"1956\" data-end=\"2052\">Cost exceeded <strong data-start=\"1972\" data-end=\"1984\">$375,000<\/strong>, an enormous sum for the era.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"v2kcud\" data-start=\"2054\" data-end=\"2076\">Artistic Treasures<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2077\" data-end=\"2142\">The church contains remarkable works of religious art, including:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2144\" data-end=\"2506\">\n<li data-section-id=\"d6vs9y\" data-start=\"2144\" data-end=\"2201\">Twelve windows by the <strong data-start=\"2168\" data-end=\"2201\">Louis Comfort Tiffany Studios<\/strong><\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1v6sbb3\" data-start=\"2202\" data-end=\"2267\">Memorial windows by the <strong data-start=\"2228\" data-end=\"2255\">George L. Payne Studios<\/strong> of Paterson<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1xol4ny\" data-start=\"2268\" data-end=\"2287\">Caen marble altar<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1ktjauj\" data-start=\"2288\" data-end=\"2346\">Gorham silver lectern, cross, and liturgical furnishings<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"2lcslh\" data-start=\"2347\" data-end=\"2380\">Magnificent carved oak interior<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1644rau\" data-start=\"2381\" data-end=\"2506\">Memorial Rood Screen dedicated in 1920 honoring parishioners who died in World War I.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"1yyko18\" data-start=\"2508\" data-end=\"2532\">Community Leadership<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2533\" data-end=\"2691\">During the long rectorate of <strong data-start=\"2562\" data-end=\"2612\">The Rev.
