Bethel AME Church<\/span><\/span><\/span> is one of Paterson’s historic African-American congregations and has served the city for more than 160 years. Located at 24 Auburn Street<\/strong>, the church is part of the historic African Methodist Episcopal Church<\/span><\/span>, the oldest independent Black Protestant denomination in the United States.<\/p>\n

Early History<\/h3>\n

Bethel AME Church was organized in 1865<\/strong>, just as the Civil War ended and slavery was abolished. It became the second African-American church established in Paterson<\/strong>, following First AME Zion Church<\/span><\/span><\/span>, which had been founded in 1834.<\/p>\n

The congregation was formed to serve Paterson’s growing African-American community, many of whom had come to the city for employment in the silk mills and other industries.<\/p>\n

Growth and Challenges<\/h3>\n

Like many early Black congregations, Bethel faced financial hardships during its first decades. Historical records indicate that the church struggled to maintain its membership and finances, and by 1889<\/strong> the original congregation had temporarily ceased operating. Many members transferred to First AME Zion during this period.<\/p>\n

The congregation was later reorganized and eventually established itself permanently on Auburn Street, where it continues to worship today.<\/p>\n

The Auburn Street Church<\/h3>\n

The present church building is a familiar landmark in Paterson’s historic Fourth Ward. The structure reflects the simple yet dignified ecclesiastical architecture typical of early twentieth-century neighborhood churches and remains an important symbol of the city’s African-American religious heritage. Bethel AME Church<\/span><\/span><\/span> continues to serve the community from this location.<\/p>\n
