Arriving in significant numbers beginning in the 1840s and continuing through the early twentieth century, Germans became skilled craftsmen, industrialists, brewers, merchants, teachers, musicians, and civic leaders. Their influence could be seen in Paterson&#8217;s industries, churches, schools, social clubs, and political life.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"rx5jr0\" data-start=\"631\" data-end=\"658\">Early German Immigration<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"660\" data-end=\"975\">The first Germans arrived in Paterson during the 1830s and 1840s, but immigration increased dramatically following the failed Revolutions of 1848 in the German states. Many &#8220;Forty-Eighters&#8221;\u2014political refugees, skilled artisans, and educated professionals\u2014sought opportunities in the rapidly growing industrial city.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"977\" data-end=\"1266\">Paterson&#8217;s expanding textile mills, locomotive works, machine shops, and foundries offered steady employment. In 1870, German immigrants Gustav Sprattler and Christian Mennel established their own brewery. In 1890, Braun Brewery, Sprattler &amp; Mennell, and several others merged to form the <strong data-start=\"2384\" data-end=\"2425\">Paterson Consolidated Brewing Company<\/strong>, one of New Jersey&#8217;s largest brewing enterprises.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2515\" data-end=\"2818\">Another major producer was the <strong data-start=\"2546\" data-end=\"2588\">Hinchliffe Brewing and Malting Company<\/strong>, whose impressive brewery complex became a Paterson landmark. It was founded specifically to serve Paterson&#8217;s growing German-speaking Catholic population and became one of the city&#8217;s most influential ethnic parishes.
