As the business expanded, he took on partners John Shaw and Thomas Penrose, and the company became known as <strong data-start=\"430\" data-end=\"460\">Shaw, Hinchliffe &amp; Penrose<\/strong> in 1867.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"509\" data-end=\"813\">The brewery was located at <strong data-start=\"536\" data-end=\"564\">Governor and Ann Streets<\/strong>, adjacent to the railroad, giving it excellent access to shipments of grain, hops, and finished beer. In 1872, a modern malt house was added, making it one of the most advanced brewing operations in New Jersey.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"13a3hvb\" data-start=\"815\" data-end=\"839\">Changes in Ownership<\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"841\" data-end=\"1275\">\n<li data-section-id=\"1t4dhvh\" data-start=\"841\" data-end=\"902\"><strong data-start=\"843\" data-end=\"851\">1861<\/strong> \u2013 Founded by John Hinchliffe as the Eagle Brewery.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1o589zg\" data-start=\"903\" data-end=\"962\"><strong data-start=\"905\" data-end=\"913\">1867<\/strong> \u2013 Reorganized as <strong data-start=\"931\" data-end=\"961\">Shaw, Hinchliffe &amp; Penrose<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"185ezq\" data-start=\"963\" data-end=\"1038\"><strong data-start=\"965\" data-end=\"973\">1878<\/strong> \u2013 Thomas Penrose retired; the firm became <strong data-start=\"1016\" data-end=\"1037\">Shaw &amp; Hinchliffe<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"115e13m\" data-start=\"1039\" data-end=\"1116\"><strong data-start=\"1041\" data-end=\"1049\">1881<\/strong> \u2013 John Shaw died while abroad, leaving John Hinchliffe sole owner.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"fif5bm\" data-start=\"1117\" data-end=\"1275\"><strong data-start=\"1119\" data-end=\"1127\">1886<\/strong> \u2013 Following John Hinchliffe&#8217;s death, his sons <strong data-start=\"1174\" data-end=\"1213\">John, William, and James Hinchliffe<\/strong> inherited the business.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"rh8sw3\" data-start=\"1277\" data-end=\"1300\">The Great Expansion<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1302\" data-end=\"1517\">In <strong data-start=\"1305\" data-end=\"1313\">1890<\/strong>, the Hinchliffe brothers formed the <strong data-start=\"1350\" data-end=\"1392\">Hinchliffe Brewing and Malting Company<\/strong> and commissioned the noted brewery architects <strong data-start=\"1439\" data-end=\"1474\">Charles Stoll &amp; Son of Brooklyn<\/strong> to design an entirely new brewing complex.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1519\" data-end=\"1545\">The new facility featured:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1547\" data-end=\"1783\">\n<li data-section-id=\"rv13kw\" data-start=\"1547\" data-end=\"1596\">A five-story brick brewhouse with granite trim.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"z0n9j8\" data-start=\"1597\" data-end=\"1634\">A three-story mechanical ice plant.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"vwkq7v\" data-start=\"1635\" data-end=\"1686\">A four-story refrigerated lager storage building.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1idf3mo\" data-start=\"1687\" data-end=\"1739\">Modern malt handling and grain storage facilities.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1kjfvzd\" data-start=\"1740\" data-end=\"1783\">Direct railroad connections for shipping.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1785\" data-end=\"1970\">At its peak, the brewery produced approximately <strong data-start=\"1833\" data-end=\"1868\">75,000 barrels of beer annually<\/strong>, making it one of the largest breweries in northern New Jersey.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"kiqn1m\" data-start=\"1972\" data-end=\"2003\">Paterson&#8217;s Brewing Industry<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2005\" data-end=\"2128\">During the 1890s, Paterson was home to several major breweries. The Hinchliffe operation stood alongside breweries such as:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2130\" data-end=\"2216\">\n<li data-section-id=\"825xs6\" data-start=\"2130\" data-end=\"2145\">Graham &amp; Post<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"66ozv2\" data-start=\"2146\" data-end=\"2161\">Braun Brewery<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1bvgle3\" data-start=\"2162\" data-end=\"2177\">Katz Brothers<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1mfxi7o\" data-start=\"2178\" data-end=\"2194\">Burton Brewery<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1ht6ze0\" data-start=\"2195\" data-end=\"2216\">Sprattler &amp; Mennell<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2218\" data-end=\"2381\">The city&#8217;s growing immigrant population\u2014particularly German, English, and Irish workers\u2014created strong demand for lager beer.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"1df96ui\" data-start=\"2383\" data-end=\"2394\">Decline<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2396\" data-end=\"2637\">Like breweries across the nation, Hinchliffe Brewing was devastated by <strong data-start=\"2467\" data-end=\"2482\">Prohibition<\/strong>. Brewing operations ceased in <strong data-start=\"2513\" data-end=\"2521\">1920<\/strong>, and the buildings were later used for storage and other industrial purposes.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"jttnoh\" data-start=\"2639\" data-end=\"2656\">The 1997 Fire<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2658\" data-end=\"2993\">A catastrophic fire in <strong data-start=\"2681\" data-end=\"2689\">1997<\/strong> destroyed much of the historic brewery complex, including the iconic brewhouse. Fortunately, several significant structures\u2014including the cold storage building and portions of the lager house\u2014survived and remain among Paterson&#8217;s most important industrial landmarks.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"lqnbcj\" data-start=\"2995\" data-end=\"3005\">Legacy<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3007\" data-end=\"3337\">The Hinchliffe family continued to influence Paterson long after brewing ended. John Hinchliffe&#8217;s grandson, <strong data-start=\"3115\" data-end=\"3137\">John V. Hinchliffe<\/strong>, served as mayor of Paterson and was instrumental in the construction of <strong data-start=\"3211\" data-end=\"3233\">Hinchliffe Stadium<\/strong>, now one of the nation&#8217;s most significant historic sports venues.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3339\" data-end=\"3572\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">Today, the remaining brewery buildings are recognized as some of the last surviving examples of Paterson&#8217;s once-thriving brewing industry and are considered important historic preservation sites.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 The Shaw &amp; Hinchliffe Brewery was one of Paterson, New Jersey&#8217;s most important nineteenth-century breweries and played a major role in the city&#8217;s industrial growth.
