The city&#8217;s growing population of English, German, Irish, and other European immigrants created a strong demand for lager beer, and several large breweries flourished before the onset of Prohibition in 1920.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"1t460vp\" data-start=\"483\" data-end=\"563\"><a href=\"https:\/\/patersonhistory.com\/index.php\/shaw-hinchliffe-brewery\/\">Eagle Brewery \/ Shaw &amp; Hinchliffe Brewery \/ Hinchliffe Brewing &amp; Malting Co.<\/a><\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"564\" data-end=\"997\">\n<li data-section-id=\"hyq1hg\" data-start=\"564\" data-end=\"605\">Founded in <strong data-start=\"577\" data-end=\"585\">1861<\/strong> by John Hinchliffe.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1cvo4xj\" data-start=\"606\" data-end=\"654\">Became <strong data-start=\"615\" data-end=\"645\">Shaw, Hinchliffe &amp; Penrose<\/strong> in 1867.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1c9mp6k\" data-start=\"655\" data-end=\"695\">Renamed <strong data-start=\"665\" data-end=\"686\">Shaw &amp; Hinchliffe<\/strong> in 1878.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1bratex\" data-start=\"696\" data-end=\"766\">Reorganized in 1890 as the <strong data-start=\"725\" data-end=\"765\">Hinchliffe Brewing &amp; Malting Company<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1garxhh\" data-start=\"767\" data-end=\"809\">Located at <strong data-start=\"780\" data-end=\"808\">Governor and Ann Streets<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"geun76\" data-start=\"810\" data-end=\"875\">Produced approximately <strong data-start=\"835\" data-end=\"862\">75,000 barrels annually<\/strong> at its peak.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"mz7mev\" data-start=\"876\" data-end=\"997\">The surviving buildings are among Paterson&#8217;s most important industrial landmarks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"kkwheo\" data-start=\"999\" data-end=\"1016\">Braun Brewery<\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"1017\" data-end=\"1309\">\n<li data-section-id=\"n6c04f\" data-start=\"1017\" data-end=\"1058\">Founded in <strong data-start=\"1030\" data-end=\"1038\">1855<\/strong> by Christian Braun.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"xzobkm\" data-start=\"1059\" data-end=\"1092\">Located on <strong data-start=\"1072\" data-end=\"1091\">Marshall Street<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"12dhqpc\" data-start=\"1093\" data-end=\"1156\">One of Paterson&#8217;s earliest successful German-owned breweries.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"5w49cg\" data-start=\"1157\" data-end=\"1309\">Produced approximately <strong data-start=\"1182\" data-end=\"1208\">6,000 barrels annually<\/strong> before becoming part of Paterson Consolidated Brewing Company.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"goxsa\" data-start=\"1311\" data-end=\"1342\">Sprattler &amp; Mennell Brewery<\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"1343\" data-end=\"1696\">\n<li data-section-id=\"13zool0\" data-start=\"1343\" data-end=\"1411\">Established in <strong data-start=\"1360\" data-end=\"1368\">1870<\/strong> by Gustav Sprattler and Christian Mennell.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"dhs0g5\" data-start=\"1412\" data-end=\"1505\">Originally brewed in Braun Brewery before moving into their own brewery on Marshall Street.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1ptx57v\" data-start=\"1506\" data-end=\"1597\">Became one of the city&#8217;s largest breweries, producing nearly <strong data-start=\"1569\" data-end=\"1596\">40,000 barrels per year<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"hrl6ml\" data-start=\"1598\" data-end=\"1696\">Continued under Christian Mennell after Sprattler&#8217;s death.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"17mawgq\" data-start=\"1698\" data-end=\"1716\">Graham Brewery<\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"1717\" data-end=\"1924\">\n<li data-section-id=\"jd2o0b\" data-start=\"1717\" data-end=\"1755\">Founded in <strong data-start=\"1730\" data-end=\"1738\">1887<\/strong> by James Graham.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"13qi1xs\" data-start=\"1756\" data-end=\"1818\">Located near the <strong data-start=\"1775\" data-end=\"1817\">New York, Lake Erie &amp; Western Railroad<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"6ub3hu\" data-start=\"1819\" data-end=\"1924\">Grew rapidly because of its modern equipment and railroad access.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"b9zfop\" data-start=\"1926\" data-end=\"1951\">Katz Brothers Brewery<\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"1952\" data-end=\"2185\">\n<li data-section-id=\"13kg10j\" data-start=\"1952\" data-end=\"2001\">Founded in <strong data-start=\"1965\" data-end=\"1973\">1877<\/strong> by Philip and Bernard Katz.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"pkjtn5\" data-start=\"2002\" data-end=\"2056\">Originally located at <strong data-start=\"2026\" data-end=\"2055\">Godwin and Bridge Streets<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"ekdzwv\" data-start=\"2057\" data-end=\"2185\">Expanded rapidly through successful brewing operations before purchasing Burton Brewery.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"17qb8uy\" data-start=\"2187\" data-end=\"2205\">Burton Brewery<\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"2206\" data-end=\"2511\">\n<li data-section-id=\"11t306h\" data-start=\"2206\" data-end=\"2263\">One of New Jersey&#8217;s largest breweries during the 1880s.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"e5i8j0\" data-start=\"2264\" data-end=\"2309\">Purchased by the Katz Brothers in <strong data-start=\"2300\" data-end=\"2308\">1882<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"san68z\" data-start=\"2310\" data-end=\"2412\">Produced well-known brands including <strong data-start=\"2349\" data-end=\"2363\">Burton XXX<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"2365\" data-end=\"2386\">Morlein&#8217;s Premium<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"2392\" data-end=\"2411\">Canada Malt Ale<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"vu8q30\" data-start=\"2413\" data-end=\"2511\">Annual production eventually exceeded <strong data-start=\"2453\" data-end=\"2472\">130,000 barrels<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"1g0qtns\" data-start=\"2513\" data-end=\"2554\">Paterson Consolidated Brewing Company<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2555\" data-end=\"2647\">In <strong data-start=\"2558\" data-end=\"2566\">1890<\/strong>, five breweries merged to form one of New Jersey&#8217;s largest brewing corporations:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2649\" data-end=\"2752\">\n<li data-section-id=\"66ozv2\" data-start=\"2649\" data-end=\"2664\">Braun Brewery<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"pkr544\" data-start=\"2665\" data-end=\"2694\">Sprattler &amp; Mennell Brewery<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"92f8hg\" data-start=\"2695\" data-end=\"2711\">Graham Brewery<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"hppwav\" data-start=\"2712\" data-end=\"2735\">Katz Brothers Brewery<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1mfxi7o\" data-start=\"2736\" data-end=\"2752\">Burton Brewery<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2754\" data-end=\"3033\">The consolidation allowed the breweries to share equipment, distribution, and management. In <strong data-start=\"2847\" data-end=\"2855\">1899<\/strong>, the Hinchliffe interests also became closely associated with the organization, with members of the Hinchliffe family serving on its board.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"1sktm2g\" data-start=\"3035\" data-end=\"3062\">Prohibition Ends an Era<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3064\" data-end=\"3466\">The ratification of the <strong data-start=\"3088\" data-end=\"3106\">18th Amendment<\/strong> and the start of <strong data-start=\"3124\" data-end=\"3139\">Prohibition<\/strong> in <strong data-start=\"3143\" data-end=\"3151\">1920<\/strong> brought commercial brewing in Paterson to an abrupt end. None of the city&#8217;s major breweries regained their former prominence after Prohibition was repealed.
