Among the most popular attractions ever built overlooking the Great Falls of the Passaic River was Forest Garden<\/strong>, a grand amusement resort that became one of Paterson’s premier recreational destinations during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Located on the grounds surrounding the famous Cottage on the Cliff<\/strong>, the complex combined breathtaking scenery, entertainment, dining, and amusement rides, making it a favorite destination for residents throughout northern New Jersey and New York.<\/p>\n

The story began around 1870<\/strong>, when the spectacular views of the Great Falls attracted entrepreneurs who recognized the area’s potential as a tourist destination. Perched dramatically on the cliffs overlooking the Falls, the Cottage on the Cliff<\/strong> was constructed as an elegant restaurant and hotel where visitors could enjoy fine meals while taking in one of America’s most magnificent natural landscapes. Long before automobiles made travel commonplace, excursion trains and trolley lines brought thousands of visitors to Paterson to experience the Falls and the growing resort.<\/p>\n

As attendance increased, the surrounding property was developed into Forest Garden<\/strong>, transforming the scenic overlook into a full-scale amusement park. Unlike the large amusement parks that would later appear along the Jersey Shore, Forest Garden offered a unique blend of natural beauty and entertainment. Guests could spend an entire day enjoying rides, concerts, dancing, and picnics while overlooking the roaring waters of the Passaic River.<\/p>\n

Among the park’s most popular attractions was its roller coaster<\/strong>, one of the earliest thrill rides in northern New Jersey. Riders experienced exciting drops and curves while enjoying spectacular views of the surrounding landscape. Another favorite attraction was the electric merry-go-round<\/strong>, an impressive modern carousel illuminated by electric lights at a time when electricity itself was still considered a marvel. Beautifully carved horses and lively band music made it one of the park’s signature attractions.<\/p>\n

The resort also featured a spacious dance hall<\/strong>, where orchestras performed the latest popular music. Weekend dances attracted young couples from throughout the region, while concerts and special events filled the hall throughout the summer season.<\/p>\n

One of Forest Garden’s most distinctive buildings was its casino<\/strong>. During the nineteenth century, the term “casino” referred not to gambling but to a social pavilion devoted to recreation and entertainment. Visitors gathered there for concerts, theatrical performances, social events, and refreshments. It served as the social center of the park and hosted countless civic gatherings and celebrations.<\/p>\n

Beyond the major attractions, Forest Garden offered numerous amusements including games, refreshment stands, picnic groves, walking paths, scenic overlooks, and open spaces where families could relax. Evening illumination made the grounds especially beautiful after dark, with electric lights creating a magical atmosphere overlooking the illuminated Great Falls.<\/p>\n

The Cottage on the Cliff<\/strong> remained the centerpiece of the resort. Its restaurant became famous for serving visitors who wished to dine while overlooking the Falls, while hotel accommodations allowed travelers to spend several days exploring Paterson and its surrounding attractions. The combination of elegant hospitality and exciting amusement made the resort one of the finest recreational destinations in New Jersey.<\/p>\n

Forest Garden reflected the changing nature of American leisure during the late Victorian and Progressive eras. As industrial workers gained more free time and improved transportation made travel easier, amusement parks became important gathering places for families. Forest Garden offered city residents an opportunity to escape crowded neighborhoods and enjoy fresh air, beautiful scenery, and wholesome entertainment.<\/p>\n

For several decades, thousands of visitors arrived each season by trolley, train, carriage, and eventually automobile. Summer weekends often found the grounds crowded with families, church groups, fraternal organizations, and excursion parties enjoying everything from thrilling rides to leisurely walks overlooking the Falls.<\/p>\n

Like many early amusement parks, Forest Garden eventually declined as newer and larger amusement centers emerged elsewhere in New Jersey and improved transportation allowed people to travel greater distances for recreation. The amusement rides disappeared, the buildings were eventually demolished, and the once-bustling resort faded into history.<\/p>\n

Today, little remains of Forest Garden or the Cottage on the Cliff, but their legacy lives on as an important chapter in the history of the Great Falls Historic District. Long before the area became a National Historical Park, generations of visitors came not only to admire the natural wonder of the Great Falls but also to experience one of New Jersey’s earliest and most memorable amusement destinations. Forest Garden demonstrated that the Falls were not only the birthplace of American industry\u2014they were also one of the state’s great places for recreation, entertainment, and community gathering.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
