However, by the early 1700s, English settlers, surveyors, and landowners were becoming increasingly influential as East Jersey came under English control.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"471\" data-end=\"574\">The principal early English settlers and landowners associated with what later became Paterson include:<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"1hn3e0z\" data-start=\"576\" data-end=\"602\">John Berry (1635\u20131695)<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"603\" data-end=\"905\">One of the earliest English proprietors of East Jersey, John Berry received large land grants north of the Passaic River after the English took control of New Netherland in 1664. Although he did not establish a settlement at the Great Falls, his holdings helped open the region to English colonization.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"16it2wq\" data-start=\"907\" data-end=\"937\">Thomas Rudyard (1640\u20131692)<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"938\" data-end=\"1191\">Deputy Governor of East Jersey from 1682 to 1683, Rudyard surveyed and promoted settlement throughout the province. His reports described the fertile lands along the Passaic River and encouraged English immigration.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"1j8suja\" data-start=\"1193\" data-end=\"1222\">Samuel Bayard (1669\u20131746)<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1223\" data-end=\"1413\">An English lawyer and colonial official, Bayard acquired extensive lands in the Totowa area. Members of the Bayard family owned farms and property that later became part of western Paterson.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"1n5buiw\" data-start=\"1415\" data-end=\"1444\">Peter Sonmans (1678\u20131734)<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1445\" data-end=\"1614\">A prominent English proprietor who managed East Jersey lands after the death of his father, Arent Sonmans. His land dealings affected much of present-day Passaic County.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"bpyklc\" data-start=\"1616\" data-end=\"1654\">Colonel Peter Schuyler (1657\u20131724)<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1655\" data-end=\"1839\">Although Dutch by ancestry, Schuyler served under English colonial government and was instrumental in administering northern New Jersey. His influence extended into the Passaic Valley.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"q97swe\" data-start=\"1841\" data-end=\"1881\">English Families in the Paterson Area<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1883\" data-end=\"1986\">By the mid-1700s, several English-speaking families had settled alongside the earlier Dutch population:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1988\" data-end=\"2061\">\n<li data-section-id=\"28uj8m\" data-start=\"1988\" data-end=\"1997\">Ryerson<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1xc4ms4\" data-start=\"1998\" data-end=\"2006\">Godwin<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1j49qeo\" data-start=\"2007\" data-end=\"2013\">Post<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"m9ii7w\" data-start=\"2014\" data-end=\"2026\">Van Houten<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"8ya4oz\" data-start=\"2027\" data-end=\"2039\">Van Winkle<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"jb7saw\" data-start=\"2040\" data-end=\"2052\">Van Gieson<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1vr3gdy\" data-start=\"2053\" data-end=\"2061\">Berdan<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2063\" data-end=\"2336\">While many of these surnames are Dutch, by the eighteenth century they were English subjects and participated in English colonial government. Farms belonging to these families surrounded the Great Falls before Paterson was established.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"46qds\" data-start=\"2338\" data-end=\"2376\">Why There Were Few English Settlers<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2378\" data-end=\"2505\">Unlike much of eastern New Jersey, the Paterson area remained overwhelmingly Dutch through most of the colonial period because:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2507\" data-end=\"2851\">\n<li data-section-id=\"11qrvjm\" data-start=\"2507\" data-end=\"2610\">The original <strong data-start=\"2522\" data-end=\"2545\">Acquackanonk Patent<\/strong> (1678) was settled largely by Dutch families from New Amsterdam.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1kx4m0r\" data-start=\"2611\" data-end=\"2692\">Dutch Reformed churches served as the community&#8217;s religious and social centers.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1jshvio\" data-start=\"2693\" data-end=\"2851\">English officials governed the colony, but relatively few English families settled immediately around the Great Falls.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"jsbj2m\" data-start=\"2853\" data-end=\"2883\">Before Paterson Was Founded<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2885\" data-end=\"3130\">When <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Alexander Hamilton<\/span><\/span> selected the Great Falls in 1791 as the site for America&#8217;s first planned industrial city, the surrounding countryside consisted of scattered farms owned by long-established colonial families, including:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"3132\" data-end=\"3244\">\n<li data-section-id=\"m9ii7w\" data-start=\"3132\" data-end=\"3144\">Van Houten<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"28uj8m\" data-start=\"3145\" data-end=\"3154\">Ryerson<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1xc4ms4\" data-start=\"3155\" data-end=\"3163\">Godwin<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1j416f0\" data-start=\"3164\" data-end=\"3170\">Colt<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1j49qeo\" data-start=\"3171\" data-end=\"3177\">Post<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"8ya4oz\" data-start=\"3178\" data-end=\"3190\">Van Winkle<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"jb7saw\" data-start=\"3191\" data-end=\"3203\">Van Gieson<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1bfbj75\" data-start=\"3204\" data-end=\"3223\">Berry (landowner)<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1ywoapu\" data-start=\"3224\" data-end=\"3244\">Bayard (landowner)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"3246\" data-end=\"3397\">Most of these farms were purchased or condemned to create the new industrial city of Paterson, chartered in 1792.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3399\" data-end=\"3779\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">For a history of Paterson itself, it is more accurate to describe the area&#8217;s earliest European residents as <strong data-start=\"3507\" data-end=\"3560\">Dutch settlers living under English colonial rule<\/strong>, rather than as an English settlement.
