He was the <strong data-start=\"151\" data-end=\"196\">first Black player in the American League<\/strong>, making his Major League Baseball debut with the Cleveland Indians on <strong data-start=\"267\" data-end=\"283\">July 5, 1947<\/strong>, just 11 weeks after Jackie Robinson broke MLB&#8217;s color barrier in the National League.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"410\" data-end=\"452\">Some of his major accomplishments include:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"453\" data-end=\"1011\">\n<li data-section-id=\"ulizri\" data-start=\"453\" data-end=\"487\"><strong data-start=\"455\" data-end=\"474\">7-time All-Star<\/strong> (1949\u20131955).<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"z9cetn\" data-start=\"488\" data-end=\"661\">Helped the <strong data-start=\"501\" data-end=\"548\">Cleveland Indians win the 1948 World Series<\/strong>, becoming the first Black player to hit a home run in a World Series game.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1beuhzy\" data-start=\"662\" data-end=\"784\">Led the American League in <strong data-start=\"691\" data-end=\"704\">home runs<\/strong> in 1952 and 1954 and in <strong data-start=\"729\" data-end=\"737\">RBIs<\/strong> in 1954.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"pi3lca\" data-start=\"785\" data-end=\"912\">Finished his MLB career with a <strong data-start=\"818\" data-end=\"873\">.288 batting average, 273 home runs, and 1,099 RBIs<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1bvqjje\" data-start=\"913\" data-end=\"1011\">Elected to the <strong data-start=\"930\" data-end=\"964\">National Baseball Hall of Fame<\/strong> in 1998.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1013\" data-end=\"1243\">Beyond his playing career, Doby became the <strong data-start=\"1056\" data-end=\"1105\">second Black manager in Major League Baseball<\/strong> when he managed the Chicago White Sox in 1978, continuing to break barriers after his playing days.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1245\" data-end=\"1595\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">Although Jackie Robinson is more widely known, many historians consider Larry Doby&#8217;s contributions equally significant because he faced similar discrimination while receiving far less public attention.
