From the early mill community at the Great Falls to the densely populated neighborhoods of the industrial era, each section of Paterson has its own story.

Downtown and the Great Falls

The oldest part of Paterson grew around the Great Falls of the Passaic River, where the Society for Establishing Useful Manufactures established the industrial city in 1792. Mills, factories, stores, banks, churches, and civic buildings developed around the falls and the downtown business district. The area became the commercial and industrial heart of the city.

The Old Mill District

The neighborhoods surrounding the Great Falls were dominated by textile and manufacturing industries during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Workers lived close to the mills, creating a dense urban community of boarding houses, apartments, stores, churches, and social organizations. The district became closely associated with Paterson’s famous silk industry.

Eastside

Eastside developed largely as a residential neighborhood during Paterson’s period of industrial expansion. Streets lined with Victorian houses, apartment buildings, churches, schools, and neighborhood businesses reflected the growth of the city’s middle and working classes. The area attracted successive waves of immigrants who contributed to its changing cultural character.

Northside

Northside developed north of the central business district and became a mixture of residential, commercial, and industrial areas. Its development was encouraged by the expansion of factories, railroads, and streetcar lines. Northside became home to many working-class families and immigrant communities.

South Paterson

South Paterson became one of the city’s most culturally diverse neighborhoods. Earlier waves of immigrants were followed by growing communities from the Middle East, particularly Syrian, Lebanese, Palestinian, and other Arab backgrounds. In the later 20th and 21st centuries, South Paterson became widely known for its Middle Eastern restaurants, bakeries, markets, and businesses.

Lakeview

Lakeview developed in the southern portion of Paterson as a largely residential neighborhood. Its name reflects the area’s proximity to Great Lake, a historic body of water that was eventually incorporated into the city’s developing urban landscape. Houses, apartment buildings, schools, churches, and local businesses created a neighborhood with a strong community identity.

Hillcrest

Hillcrest developed on higher ground east of the older industrial portions of Paterson. During the 20th century, it became primarily residential, with single-family homes, apartment buildings, schools, and neighborhood shopping areas. The neighborhood’s elevation distinguished it from the densely built areas closer to the Passaic River.

Riverside

Riverside developed along and near the Passaic River. Its history was closely connected with transportation, manufacturing, and the river itself. Industrial properties occupied portions of the river corridor while residential streets developed nearby.

Wrigley Park and the Westside

The western sections of Paterson expanded substantially during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Residential development accompanied the growth of factories and transportation routes. Later generations of immigrants and African American families helped shape the neighborhoods west of downtown.

The 20th-Century Neighborhoods

During the 20th century, Paterson’s neighborhoods continued to change as immigration, suburbanization, industrial decline, and new migration transformed the city. Italian, Irish, Jewish, Polish, German, Syrian, Lebanese, Armenian, Hispanic, African American, and many other communities have contributed to Paterson’s history.

A City of Neighborhoods

Paterson’s neighborhoods should not be viewed simply as boundaries on a map. They represent the people who built homes, operated businesses, worked in the mills, founded churches and synagogues, created social clubs, organized labor unions, raised families, and established cultural traditions.

The history of Paterson is therefore also the history of its neighborhoods. Each neighborhood preserves a part of the larger story of Paterson as an industrial city, an immigrant city, and one of New Jersey’s most diverse communities.

Downtown Eastside Hillcrest Totowa Section Riverside Lakeview South Paterson Paterson, New Jersey, developed as a collection of distinct neighborhoods shaped by the Passaic River, industry, transportation, immigration, and the city’s changing population.
