Located in the city’s southeastern corner, Hillcrest is bordered by the city line with Clifton, the slopes of Garret Mountain, and the Eastside section. Known for its tree-lined streets, well-built homes, and suburban character, Hillcrest became one of Paterson’s most desirable residential neighborhoods.

Early History

Before residential development, much of the Hillcrest area consisted of farmland, woodlands, and open fields. During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the land formed part of several large estates and farms that lay outside Paterson’s early industrial center along the Great Falls.

Because the area sat on higher ground overlooking the city, it remained largely rural while downtown Paterson expanded into one of America’s leading manufacturing centers.

Residential Development

The neighborhood began to take shape between 1910 and 1940, when Paterson experienced rapid population growth. As factories prospered, many business owners, professionals, merchants, and skilled workers sought quieter residential neighborhoods away from the crowded mill districts.

Developers promoted Hillcrest as a modern suburban community featuring:

Tree-lined streets

Larger residential lots

Detached single-family homes

Easy access to downtown Paterson

Cleaner air and scenic views

Unlike many older Paterson neighborhoods, Hillcrest was carefully planned rather than growing organically around factories.

Architecture

Hillcrest features an impressive variety of early twentieth-century architectural styles, including:

Colonial Revival

Tudor Revival

Dutch Colonial Revival

Cape Cod

Craftsman

English Cottage

Ranch homes (post-World War II)

Many houses were constructed between the 1920s and 1950s and remain well preserved today.

Westside Park

One of Hillcrest’s defining landmarks is Westside Park. Designed in part by the renowned Olmsted Brothers landscape architecture firm, the park became an important recreational space for neighborhood residents. Its walking paths, athletic fields, tennis courts, and open lawns continue to serve the community today.

Schools and Community

As the neighborhood grew, several schools, churches, and civic organizations were established to serve its expanding population. Hillcrest developed a strong sense of community and became known for active neighborhood associations, youth sports, scouting organizations, and civic involvement.

Many generations of Paterson families have remained in Hillcrest for decades, contributing to the neighborhood’s reputation for stability.

Transportation

Hillcrest benefited from excellent transportation links. Residents could reach downtown Paterson by trolley and later by bus, while nearby major roads—including McBride Avenue—provided convenient automobile access throughout northern New Jersey.

Postwar Growth

Following World War II, additional homes filled the remaining undeveloped land. Returning veterans and their families helped transform Hillcrest into a thriving middle-class neighborhood.

By the 1950s, Hillcrest was largely built out and had become one of Paterson’s premier residential communities.

Hillcrest Today

Today, Hillcrest remains one of Paterson’s most attractive neighborhoods. It is recognized for:

Quiet residential streets

Mature shade trees

Diverse architectural styles

Strong neighborhood identity

Proximity to Garret Mountain

Easy access to Clifton and major highways

Despite changes throughout the city over the decades, Hillcrest has retained much of its original suburban character and continues to be one of Paterson’s most sought-after places to live.

Interesting Facts

Most of Hillcrest was developed between 1920 and 1955.

The neighborhood contains many homes built by local Paterson builders rather than large national developers.

Several streets were intentionally designed to follow the natural contours of the hillside instead of using Paterson’s traditional grid pattern.

The elevated location provides some of the finest residential views in the city.

Hillcrest represents Paterson’s transition from a nineteenth-century industrial city to a twentieth-century residential community, offering a glimpse into the city’s suburban expansion while preserving much of its historic charm.

The Hillcrest neighborhood is one of Paterson’s youngest residential sections, developed primarily during the first half of the twentieth century.
