The <\/span>Passaic County Courthouse Annex<\/strong>, located at <\/span>63\u201365 Hamilton Street<\/strong> in downtown Paterson, is one of the city’s finest examples of late nineteenth-century civic architecture. Originally constructed as the <\/span>United States Post Office and Customs House<\/strong>, the building has served the public continuously for more than 125 years and today functions as part of the Passaic County Courthouse complex.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

A Federal Building for a Growing Industrial City<\/h3>\n

By the late 1890s, Paterson had become one of America’s leading manufacturing centers. The city’s expanding silk, locomotive, and machinery industries brought rapid population growth and increased demand for federal services. The existing post office was no longer adequate, prompting the federal government to authorize the construction of a new post office and customs house.<\/p>\n

Completed in 1899<\/strong>, the building was designed to symbolize the importance of Paterson as one of New Jersey’s principal industrial cities.<\/p>\n

The building is a striking example of Dutch (Flemish) Baroque Revival<\/strong> architecture, a style rarely used for federal buildings in the United States.<\/p>\n
