data-end="146">Danforth Memorial Library, located at 250 Broadway in Paterson, New Jersey, is one of the city’s finest architectural landmarks and one of the most significant public libraries in the state. Since opening its doors in 1905, the library has served as the headquarters of the Paterson Free Public Library system and has remained a symbol of the city’s commitment to education, culture, and public service. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places for its architectural, educational, and social significance.

The Beginning of Public Library Service

Although Paterson had several private libraries and subscription reading rooms during the nineteenth century, these institutions were generally available only to paying members. As the city grew into one of America’s leading industrial centers, civic leaders recognized the need for a free public library that would serve all residents.

In 1884, New Jersey passed legislation permitting municipalities to establish free public libraries. On April 13, 1885, the citizens of Paterson voted overwhelmingly in favor of creating a public library. This made the Paterson Free Public Library one of the earliest municipally supported public libraries in New Jersey and the oldest public library in the state established by direct vote of the people.

The library first occupied rented quarters on Church Street before moving to the former residence of the Danforth family at the corner of Church and Market Streets.

Mary Elizabeth Danforth Ryle’s Gift

The library owes its existence largely to the generosity of Mary Elizabeth Danforth Ryle, daughter of industrialist Charles Danforth, a pioneer in Paterson’s locomotive and textile machinery industries.

Mrs. Ryle donated her family’s former home to the city as a permanent library and requested only that it bear her father’s name. She also financed extensive improvements to the building, creating a handsome public library that quickly became one of Paterson’s most valued civic institutions.

The Great Fire of 1902

Disaster struck on February 9, 1902, when the Great Paterson Fire swept through downtown.

The blaze destroyed City Hall, churches, banks, schools, businesses, and the Danforth Library itself. Approximately 40,000 books were lost in the fire, with only volumes borrowed by patrons surviving because they happened to be outside the building.

Rather than discouraging the community, the tragedy inspired plans for an even grander library worthy of the growing city. Mrs. Ryle once again came to the rescue, contributing approximately $100,000 toward construction of a new building on Broadway.

Designing a Landmark

The new library was designed by noted architect Henry Bacon, who would later gain international fame as the architect of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.

Bacon chose the Classical Revival style, creating a dignified structure inspired by ancient Greek and Roman architecture. Massive stone walls, monumental columns, broad stairways, and elegant proportions gave the building a timeless appearance intended to symbolize learning, democracy, and civic pride.

Construction began in 1903, and the cornerstone ceremony included the placement of numerous historical artifacts documenting Paterson’s history, the Great Fire, and the city’s recovery.

Opening Day

The Danforth Memorial Library was formally dedicated on April 29, 1905, with former New Jersey Governor John W. Griggs praising the building as both “an ornament and a utility” for the city.

The library officially opened to the public on May 1, 1905, attracting thousands of visitors eager to see the magnificent new building.

At a construction cost of approximately $220,000, it was among the finest public libraries in New Jersey. The original building featured:

Four levels of fireproof steel book stacks

Children’s reading rooms

Reference and research departments

Newspaper and periodical reading rooms

Art galleries

Assembly and lecture rooms

Space for more than 60,000 volumes

The library immediately became one of Paterson’s principal cultural institutions.

An Art Museum Within a Library

Beyond books, the Danforth Memorial Library developed an impressive collection of American and European art.

Important donations came from Jennie Tuttle Hobart, widow of Vice President Garret A. Hobart, and philanthropist Ralph P. Ross. Today the library houses paintings, sculptures, and decorative arts dating primarily from the nineteenth century, making it one of New Jersey’s most significant municipal art collections.

Birthplace of the Paterson Museum

In 1925, the Board of Trustees of the Paterson Free Public Library established what became the Paterson Museum.

The museum’s earliest exhibits were displayed in the library’s assembly room before the growing collection moved to nearby quarters and eventually to the restored Rogers Locomotive Erecting Shop in 1982. The museum traces its origins directly to the Danforth Memorial Library.

Serving the Community

Throughout the twentieth century, the Paterson Free Public Library expanded by opening branch libraries throughout the city’s neighborhoods.

The Danforth Memorial Library remained the administrative and cultural center of the system while adapting to changing community needs through:

Adult education programs

Community literacy initiatives

Public computer access

Expanded multilingual collections

Children’s educational programming

Historical and genealogical resources

The library has continually evolved while maintaining its historic character.

Historic Recognition

Recognizing its architectural and historical importance, the Danforth Memorial Library was:

Added to the New Jersey Register of Historic Places in 1983

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places on March 1, 1984

These designations recognize the building’s outstanding architecture, educational importance, and role in Paterson’s civic history.

Preservation and the Future

More than 120 years after opening, the Danforth Memorial Library continues to serve the people of Paterson.

Recent rehabilitation efforts have focused on preserving Henry Bacon’s architectural masterpiece while modernizing the building for twenty-first-century use through accessibility improvements, roof repairs, restoration of public spaces, and updated facilities.

Today, the library remains one of Paterson’s greatest civic treasures—a monument to philanthropy, public education, and the belief that free access to knowledge strengthens an entire community.

The Danforth Memorial Library, located at 250 Broadway in Paterson, New Jersey, is one of the city’s finest architectural landmarks and one of the most significant public libraries in the state.
