Built in the early 1830s, the house reflects the transformation of Paterson from a developing manufacturing town into one of America’s leading industrial centers. It is historically significant not only for its architecture but also for its connection to Daniel Thompson, an early Paterson cotton manufacturer.

Today the Thompson House stands beside the John Ryle House at 9 Mill Street. The two buildings are commonly known as the Daniel Thompson and John Ryle Houses and were individually associated with two important figures in Paterson’s early industrial history.

Early History

Daniel Thompson acquired the property in 1833, purchasing the lot from the Society for Establishing Useful Manufactures (S.U.M.), the organization founded in 1791 to establish Paterson as an industrial community. Thompson paid $500 for the property.

The house was constructed shortly afterward, generally dated to about 1832–1835. Historic documentation describes it as a substantial Federal-style, two-and-a-half-story frame house, with a raised basement and dormer windows. The house originally stood on a local sandstone foundation.

Its location was particularly appropriate for an industrialist. Mill Street was situated directly within Paterson’s rapidly developing manufacturing district, close to the mills and factories that depended upon the waterpower of the Passaic River and the city’s raceway system.

Daniel Thompson and Paterson’s Cotton Industry

Daniel Thompson was involved in Paterson’s early cotton manufacturing industry. The National Register documentation identifies him as a manufacturer who produced cotton yarn on commission in Paterson’s mill district. His business was located across Mill Street from his residence.

The relationship between the house and the surrounding mills provides an excellent illustration of early Paterson. During the first decades of the nineteenth century, manufacturers and their families often lived immediately alongside the factories that powered the city’s economic growth.

The Thompson property was therefore both a residence and part of a larger industrial landscape. The nearby factories, raceways, workers’ housing, commercial buildings and transportation routes made Mill Street an important component of early Paterson.

The House in 1845

Thompson did not remain in the house for the rest of his life. In July 1845, he sold the property to Theunis Cooper as he prepared to leave Paterson. A contemporary advertisement in the Paterson Intelligencer provides an unusually detailed description of the house.

The advertisement described the property as being on Mill Street at the corner of John Street, opposite the factory of the late Daniel Holsman. The lot measured approximately 25 feet by 73 feet, while the house was about 25 by 32 feet. It was described as having a brick front and being built “in the most substantial manner.”

The advertisement also gives us a glimpse of the interior:

Basement: Two spacious kitchens with fireplaces, closets and other conveniences.

First floor: Two spacious rooms, including one with a brass gate and another with a Franklin stove.

Interior finishes: Marble jambs were associated with the principal rooms.

Attic: Three finished bedrooms and a large storeroom.

The description suggests that the house was considered a comfortable and respectable residence for one or possibly two families.

Architecture

Architecturally, the Thompson House is an important surviving example of an early nineteenth-century Paterson residence. It is approximately two-and-a-half stories high, with a raised basement and dormer windows. Although originally a frame structure, its front façade was covered with brick sometime during the nineteenth century, apparently by the 1890s or earlier.

The building’s Federal-style characteristics reflect the architectural traditions still common during Paterson’s early industrial period.

Its significance is enhanced by its survival alongside the neighboring John Ryle House. Together, the two structures provide an unusually tangible picture of what Paterson’s Mill Street neighborhood looked like during the city’s formative industrial decades.

Historic American Buildings Survey

The importance of the Thompson House was recognized before its National Register listing. It was documented by the Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS), which recorded the building through photographs, drawings and architectural documentation. The HABS survey is identified as NJ-652.

Historic photographs and drawings made during the twentieth century provide valuable evidence of the building’s appearance and interior features.

Among the documented features was a carved wooden panel above the double doorway between the parlors, illustrating the quality of craftsmanship found inside the house.

Threat of Demolition

One of the most remarkable chapters in the history of the Thompson House occurred nearly 150 years after its construction.

By the twentieth century, changes to Paterson’s streets and transportation network threatened the survival of the historic buildings on Mill Street. A proposed road realignment associated with Ellison Street placed the houses in danger of demolition.

Rather than allowing them to be destroyed, preservationists arranged for both the Thompson and Ryle Houses to be moved in November 1979. They were relocated a short distance from their original location to their present positions at 8 and 9 Mill Street.

The move was an important preservation achievement. The houses were physically moved rather than demolished, allowing these rare survivors of early industrial Paterson to remain part of the city’s historic landscape.

Because the original foundation could not simply accompany the buildings, a new foundation was constructed for the Thompson House after the move.

National Register of Historic Places

The historic importance of the two buildings was formally recognized when the Daniel Thompson and John Ryle Houses were listed together on the National Register of Historic Places on July 30, 1981. They had previously been listed on the New Jersey Register of Historic Places on June 17, 1981.

The City of Paterson also recognizes the buildings as local historic landmarks. The city’s historic landmarks documentation lists the Daniel Thompson & John Ryle Houses at 8 and 9 Mill Street, with a construction date of approximately 1830.

A Neighbor with an Important Story

The Thompson House is particularly interesting because of its immediate neighbor, the John Ryle House.

John Ryle later became an important figure in Paterson’s silk industry and served as mayor of Paterson in 1869–1870. He is widely credited with helping establish the silk industry that eventually earned Paterson the nickname “Silk City.”

Thus, the two houses represent two important stages in Paterson’s industrial development:

Daniel Thompson — cotton manufacturing and the early industrial era

John Ryle — the emergence of Paterson’s silk industry

Their survival together makes Mill Street an unusually valuable historic location.

The Thompson House Today

The Daniel Thompson House remains one of the significant historic houses associated with Paterson’s early manufacturing era. Its importance goes beyond the building itself. It represents the period when Paterson’s industrial landscape was taking shape around the Great Falls, the S.U.M. raceway system and the mills along the Passaic River.

The house is also part of the broader Great Falls/S.U.M. Historic District, where it can be understood in its original historical context: a manufacturer’s residence situated immediately among the factories and infrastructure that made Paterson one of America’s pioneering industrial cities. A Greater Paterson Chamber historic-district guide identifies the Thompson House as dating to about 1832 and specifically connects Thompson with cotton manufacturing.

For Paterson, the house is important because it preserves a physical connection to the people who lived and worked in the city’s earliest industrial community. Its survival—especially after the 1979 relocation—allows present-day visitors and researchers to see a rare example of the residential environment created alongside Paterson’s first generation of factories.

Significance to Paterson History

The Daniel Thompson House tells several stories at once:

The birth of industrial Paterson — Thompson’s house was built during the city’s early manufacturing expansion.

The cotton industry — Thompson was directly involved in cotton-yarn manufacturing.

The S.U.M. — the property was purchased from the Society for Establishing Useful Manufactures.

Early nineteenth-century architecture — the house preserves an example of Federal-period residential design.

Industrial-residential relationships — the manufacturer’s home stood immediately among Paterson’s factories.

Preservation history — the house survived a twentieth-century threat of demolition through relocation in 1979.

Paterson’s industrial evolution — its pairing with the John Ryle House illustrates the transition from early cotton manufacturing toward the city’s famous silk industry.

National significance — the Thompson and Ryle Houses have been listed on both the New Jersey and National Registers of Historic Places since 1981.

The Daniel Thompson House is therefore much more than an old residence.
