It combined a hotel and tavern with a museum and theater, making it an important center of entertainment, education, political discussion, and public gatherings during Paterson&#8217;s formative years.<\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"auto\" data-section-id=\"audga6\" data-start=\"450\" data-end=\"485\">Peter Archdeacon and the Museum<\/h3>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"487\" data-end=\"758\">The story of the Museum Hotel is closely associated with <strong data-start=\"544\" data-end=\"564\">Peter Archdeacon<\/strong>, an English immigrant who settled in the Paterson area after the War of 1812. Archdeacon had worked at several trades, but he developed a strong interest in the natural world and local history.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"760\" data-end=\"1123\">He collected <strong data-start=\"773\" data-end=\"875\">minerals, fossils, Native American artifacts, animal specimens, military relics, and other objects<\/strong> from Paterson and the surrounding countryside. As his collection grew, Archdeacon envisioned creating a museum where his own &#8220;curiosities&#8221; and collections belonging to friends could be displayed to the public.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"1125\" data-end=\"1262\">The location was particularly appropriate because Paterson was rapidly developing into one of America&#8217;s important industrial communities.<\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"auto\" data-section-id=\"1f4nvd3\" data-start=\"1264\" data-end=\"1300\">Construction of the Museum Hotel<\/h3>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"1302\" data-end=\"1444\">On <strong data-start=\"1305\" data-end=\"1323\">April 30, 1833<\/strong>, General <strong data-start=\"1333\" data-end=\"1351\">Abraham Godwin<\/strong> laid the cornerstone for the Museum Hotel at the northeast corner of Main and Smith Streets.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"1446\" data-end=\"1533\">The building was a <strong data-start=\"1465\" data-end=\"1488\">two-story structure<\/strong>. The arrangement was unusual for the period:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1535\" data-end=\"1699\">\n<li data-section-id=\"t7407v\" data-start=\"1535\" data-end=\"1570\"><strong data-start=\"1537\" data-end=\"1553\">First floor:<\/strong> Hotel and tavern<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"6rl118\" data-start=\"1571\" data-end=\"1609\"><strong data-start=\"1573\" data-end=\"1590\">Second floor:<\/strong> Museum and theater<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1ky9ptr\" data-start=\"1610\" data-end=\"1699\"><strong data-start=\"1612\" data-end=\"1637\">Second-floor balcony:<\/strong> Facing Main Street and used as a platform for public speakers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"1701\" data-end=\"1796\">The museum opened to the public on <strong data-start=\"1736\" data-end=\"1757\">December 21, 1833<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"auto\" data-section-id=\"1pzfmgn\" data-start=\"1798\" data-end=\"1835\">One of New Jersey&#8217;s Early Museums<\/h3>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"1837\" data-end=\"2053\">The Museum Hotel&#8217;s museum was advertised as a major attraction. Newspaper advertisements proclaimed it as the <strong data-start=\"1947\" data-end=\"1975\">only museum in the state<\/strong>, offering visitors an opportunity to see displays devoted to natural history.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"2055\" data-end=\"2237\">Among the exhibits were <strong data-start=\"2079\" data-end=\"2135\">animals, birds, shells, minerals and other specimens<\/strong>. One advertised display presented a forest scene containing a panther, bear, deer, and other animals.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"2239\" data-end=\"2432\">The museum was open daily, generally from <strong data-start=\"2281\" data-end=\"2304\">9 a.m. until 5 p.m.<\/strong>, with extended evening hours on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Admission was <strong data-start=\"2377\" data-end=\"2393\">one shilling<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"2434\" data-end=\"2705\">The collections also included objects associated with the area&#8217;s Native American history. Later historical research notes that Native American artifacts collected in the Great Falls area were eventually displayed at the Museum Hotel.<\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"auto\" data-section-id=\"6sjl7w\" data-start=\"2707\" data-end=\"2738\">A Place for Public Meetings<\/h3>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"2740\" data-end=\"2870\">The Museum Hotel was more than a tourist attraction. It became an important <strong data-start=\"2816\" data-end=\"2869\">meeting place for the young community of Paterson<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"2872\" data-end=\"3132\">During the 1830s, hotels and taverns frequently served as meeting places for government officials and civic organizations. The <strong data-start=\"2999\" data-end=\"3038\">Passaic County Board of Freeholders<\/strong> held meetings at the Museum Hotel in <strong data-start=\"3076\" data-end=\"3093\">1837 and 1838<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"3134\" data-end=\"3350\">The balcony overlooking Main Street also gave the building an important role in public life. Before Paterson had a major opera house or purpose-built public auditorium, speakers could address crowds from the balcony.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"3352\" data-end=\"3616\">This made the Museum Hotel an early example of the type of multifunctional public building that later became common in Paterson: a place where people could <strong data-start=\"3508\" data-end=\"3615\">eat, socialize, conduct business, attend entertainment, hear speeches, and participate in civic affairs<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"auto\" data-section-id=\"1l4mfdx\" data-start=\"3618\" data-end=\"3631\">The Hotel<\/h3>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"3633\" data-end=\"3789\">The hotel itself was considered one of the better hotels in Paterson. Its location on Main Street placed it in the heart of the growing commercial district.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"3791\" data-end=\"4045\">The <strong data-start=\"3795\" data-end=\"3837\">1859 Directory of the City of Paterson<\/strong> lists <strong data-start=\"3844\" data-end=\"3915\">Peter Archdeacon as the former hotel proprietor of the Museum Hotel<\/strong>, demonstrating the establishment&#8217;s continuing recognition in the city&#8217;s business community.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"4047\" data-end=\"4338\">In 1860, Archdeacon advertised the property for sale or lease. His advertisement described the Museum Hotel as a <strong data-start=\"4160\" data-end=\"4226\">&#8220;well known, commodious and long-established Hotel and Tavern&#8221;<\/strong> and noted that the property included an adjoining lot, stable, and sheds.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"4340\" data-end=\"4459\">Archdeacon retired from the hotel business and died in <strong data-start=\"4395\" data-end=\"4420\">1863 at the age of 87<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"auto\" data-section-id=\"13bqduf\" data-start=\"4461\" data-end=\"4495\">Importance in Paterson History<\/h3>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"4497\" data-end=\"4625\">The Museum Hotel is significant because it illustrates what Paterson was like during the <strong data-start=\"4586\" data-end=\"4624\">early decades of industrialization<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"4627\" data-end=\"4871\">In the 1830s, Paterson was still a relatively young industrial community. There were not yet the extensive network of theaters, lecture halls, fraternal buildings, libraries, museums, and civic facilities that would appear later in the century.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"4873\" data-end=\"4928\">The Museum Hotel filled several of these roles at once.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"4930\" data-end=\"4937\">It was:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"4939\" data-end=\"5206\">\n<li data-section-id=\"1gs964i\" data-start=\"4939\" data-end=\"4963\"><strong data-start=\"4941\" data-end=\"4963\">A hotel and tavern<\/strong><\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"trqob6\" data-start=\"4964\" data-end=\"4985\"><strong data-start=\"4966\" data-end=\"4985\">An early museum<\/strong><\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"cj9b8y\" data-start=\"4986\" data-end=\"5001\"><strong data-start=\"4988\" data-end=\"5001\">A theater<\/strong><\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"13lhdtr\" data-start=\"5002\" data-end=\"5029\"><strong data-start=\"5004\" data-end=\"5029\">A public lecture site<\/strong><\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1p2agma\" data-start=\"5030\" data-end=\"5061\"><strong data-start=\"5032\" data-end=\"5061\">A political meeting place<\/strong><\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1cl9f14\" data-start=\"5062\" data-end=\"5097\"><strong data-start=\"5064\" data-end=\"5097\">A government meeting location<\/strong><\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"lminzg\" data-start=\"5098\" data-end=\"5133\"><strong data-start=\"5100\" data-end=\"5133\">A place for social gatherings<\/strong><\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"13tau1w\" data-start=\"5134\" data-end=\"5206\"><strong data-start=\"5136\" data-end=\"5206\">An early center for the study and display of local natural history<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"5208\" data-end=\"5316\">Its location at Main and Smith Streets also placed it at an important crossroads in the developing downtown.<\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"auto\" data-section-id=\"1lycn0o\" data-start=\"5318\" data-end=\"5367\">A Precursor to Paterson&#8217;s Later Meeting Halls<\/h3>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"5369\" data-end=\"5515\">The Museum Hotel can be viewed as an early predecessor of the many halls and public gathering places that later became characteristic of Paterson.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"5517\" data-end=\"5727\">As the city grew, specialized meeting places appeared for <strong data-start=\"5575\" data-end=\"5726\">Masons, Odd Fellows, labor organizations, German-American societies, churches, political organizations, cultural groups, and immigrant associations<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"5729\" data-end=\"5848\">The Museum Hotel represents an earlier period when a single prominent establishment could serve many of these purposes.<\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"auto\" data-section-id=\"7ug08f\" data-start=\"5850\" data-end=\"5871\">Historical Legacy<\/h3>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"5873\" data-end=\"6024\">Although the Museum Hotel no longer survives as a major landmark, its history provides an important glimpse into <strong data-start=\"5986\" data-end=\"6023\">early nineteenth-century Paterson<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"6026\" data-end=\"6249\">It demonstrates that the city&#8217;s residents were interested in science, natural history, entertainment, public discussion, and local history well before the establishment of Paterson&#8217;s later museums and cultural institutions.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\" data-start=\"6251\" data-end=\"6544\">The building also illustrates the important role that <strong data-start=\"6305\" data-end=\"6357\">hotels and taverns played as early civic centers<\/strong>.
