Canaan Baptist Church is one of Paterson’s oldest and most respected African-American Baptist congregations. Since its founding in 1908, the church has served as a center of Christian worship, spiritual growth, education, and community service for generations of Paterson residents.

Early History

Canaan Baptist Church was organized in 1908 through the vision of Rev. Benjamin J. Holcomb, his brothers Prophet M. Holcomb and Charles H. Holcomb, together with a small group of dedicated Christians. The congregation initially worshiped at a church building located at Belfield Avenue and Haines Street in Paterson.

For more than sixty years, the congregation faithfully worshiped at its original location while steadily increasing in membership and expanding its ministries. Under the leadership of Rev. Holcomb, the church experienced both spiritual and financial growth, laying the foundation for future generations.

As membership continued to grow throughout the twentieth century, plans were developed for a larger sanctuary. The congregation eventually relocated to its present church home at 535 East 22nd Street, providing expanded space for worship, education, and community outreach.

Pastoral Leadership

Rev. Benjamin J. Holcomb (1908–1924)

Founder and first pastor of Canaan Baptist Church, Rev. Holcomb guided the congregation through its formative years, establishing a strong biblical foundation and a tradition of faithful ministry that continues today.

Rev. B. H. Moore (1925–1967)

Rev. Moore succeeded the founding pastor and continued to strengthen the congregation through faithful preaching and organizational development during an important period in the church’s history.

Rev. Dr. Gadson L. Graham (1960–2015)

Rev. Dr. Gadson L. Graham served as pastor for fifty-five years, making him one of the longest-serving pastors in Paterson’s history. Under his leadership, Canaan Baptist Church experienced extraordinary growth in membership, missions, and community service.

Among his many accomplishments were:

  • Establishment of the Canaan Economic Development Corporation
  • Creation of a community food bank
  • Development of after-school and summer youth programs
  • Computer Learning Center
  • Community library
  • Health Ministry
  • Haitian Mission Project supporting churches, schools, clinics, and agricultural development in Haiti

Following his retirement in 2015, Rev. Graham was named Pastor Emeritus in recognition of his decades of faithful leadership.

Rev. Barry L. Graham (2015–Present)

A lifelong member of Canaan Baptist Church, Rev. Barry L. Graham served as Assistant Pastor before being installed as Senior Pastor on March 22, 2015.

His ministry emphasizes:

Alongside congregations such as Calvary Baptist Church, Second Baptist Church, and St. Luke Baptist Church, Canaan has played a vital role in the city’s religious, educational, civic, and social development.

Today, the church continues its historic ministry of worship, biblical teaching, evangelism, and community service while preserving a rich legacy that began in 1908.
