Mayor of Paterson, New Jersey (2010–2014)
Jeffery J. Jones served as the 45th Mayor of Paterson, New Jersey, from July 1, 2010, to July 1, 2014. A lifelong Paterson resident, Jones built a career in public service before becoming mayor, serving on the Paterson City Council and as its president. His election marked a significant political change in the city, as he defeated incumbent Mayor José “Joey” Torres in the 2010 mayoral election on a platform centered on reform, transparency, and restoring public confidence in municipal government.
Born on February 8, 1958, in Paterson, Jones dedicated much of his professional life to serving his hometown. Prior to becoming mayor, he worked in public administration and community affairs while establishing himself as an advocate for neighborhood revitalization and responsible government. As a member of the City Council, he developed a reputation for fiscal oversight and encouraging greater accountability in City Hall.
Upon taking office in 2010, Mayor Jones inherited a city facing serious financial pressures, aging infrastructure, and public safety challenges. His administration focused on improving municipal services, strengthening financial management, pursuing economic development, and increasing government transparency. He also worked to secure grants and outside funding for neighborhood improvements and infrastructure projects while promoting redevelopment throughout Paterson.
One of the greatest challenges of Jones’s administration came in 2011 when Hurricane Irene and the remnants of Tropical Storm Lee caused severe flooding in Paterson. His administration coordinated emergency response and recovery efforts as residents coped with widespread property damage and displacement. The city’s handling of emergency overtime compensation later became the subject of public controversy and political debate during his term.
Jones sought a second four-year term in 2014 but was defeated in a rematch with former Mayor Joey Torres. After leaving office, he remained recognized as an important figure in Paterson’s modern political history, having led the city during a period marked by fiscal challenges, natural disasters, and ongoing efforts to improve municipal governance.
Although his tenure generated both praise and criticism, Jeffery Jones is remembered for emphasizing accountability, ethics in government, and community engagement. His administration represented a transitional period in Paterson’s continuing efforts to address economic development, improve public services, and strengthen confidence in local government.
