Our Lady of Lourdes Church is one of Paterson’s oldest Roman Catholic parishes, located in the Riverside neighborhood at 440 River Street, where it has served generations of immigrant families for nearly a century and a half.
History
The parish was established in 1882, making it one of the oldest Catholic parishes in the Diocese of Paterson. It was originally founded to serve Belgian immigrants who had settled in Paterson to work in the city’s flourishing silk industry. At the time, Paterson’s rapidly growing immigrant population led to the creation of several national parishes, each serving a particular ethnic community.
The parish was dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes, honoring the Blessed Virgin Mary’s apparitions to St. Bernadette Soubirous at Lourdes, France, in 1858. Devotion to Our Lady of Lourdes spread rapidly throughout the Catholic world during the late nineteenth century, making the title especially meaningful to European immigrants.
The Church Building
The church at 440 River Street became the permanent home of the parish and has remained a landmark in Paterson’s Riverside section. Built in a traditional Roman Catholic architectural style, it features:
- A handsome brick exterior with a prominent bell tower.
- Beautiful stained-glass windows.
- A spacious sanctuary designed for large congregations.
- Traditional devotional shrines honoring the Blessed Virgin Mary and other saints.
Over the years, renovations have preserved the church while maintaining its historic character.

Although founded for Belgian Catholics, the parish gradually welcomed families from many backgrounds, including:

Immaculate Conception Mission
In 1939, the Diocese established Immaculate Conception as a mission of Our Lady of Lourdes to serve another growing neighborhood. The mission operated until 1972, when it closed and its territory returned to neighboring parishes.
Legacy
For nearly 150 years, Our Lady of Lourdes has been a symbol of faith and perseverance in Paterson. Like many of the city’s historic Catholic churches, it has adapted to changing neighborhoods while remaining faithful to its mission of worship, education, and service. Today it remains an active parish within the Diocese of Paterson, continuing a tradition begun in 1882.
