St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church is one of Paterson’s historic Roman Catholic parishes. Located at 138 Beech Street in the city’s Northside neighborhood, it has long served successive immigrant communities and today is a vibrant multilingual parish within the Diocese of Paterson.
History
The parish was established in 1892 to serve Paterson’s rapidly growing Italian-American population. During the late nineteenth century, thousands of immigrants from southern Italy settled in the surrounding neighborhood to work in Paterson’s silk mills and other industries. As the community expanded, a separate parish dedicated to St. Anthony of Padua, one of Italy’s most beloved saints, was organized.
The present church was constructed during the early twentieth century and became the spiritual and social center of the neighborhood. In addition to religious services, the parish sponsored:
- A parish school
- Religious education programs
- Italian-language societies
- Feast day celebrations
- Charitable organizations
- Youth clubs and athletic activities
For many decades, St. Anthony’s annual feast and procession drew thousands of worshippers from throughout northern New Jersey.
Architecture
The church is a handsome early twentieth-century Roman Catholic structure featuring:
- A symmetrical brick façade
- Twin bell towers
- Romanesque and Renaissance Revival influences
- Stained-glass windows depicting the life of Christ and St. Anthony
- A richly decorated sanctuary with traditional statuary and devotional altars
Its architecture reflects the style favored by many Italian-American parishes built between 1890 and 1925.
The Parish Today
Today the parish continues to serve a diverse congregation with Masses and ministries in multiple languages. It remains an active center for worship, faith formation, youth programs, prayer groups, and community outreach under the Diocese of Paterson.
Patron Saint
St. Anthony of Padua (1195–1231) was a Franciscan friar and one of the most beloved saints in the Catholic Church. He is especially known as:

- Defender of the poor
- Doctor of the Church
His feast day, June 13, is celebrated worldwide and has traditionally been marked by special devotions and processions at St. Anthony’s Parish.
