St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church

St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church is one of Paterson’s most significant historic churches and has served the city’s Italian-American community for more than a century. Located at 74 Cianci Street, the parish was established in 1903 to meet the spiritual needs of the rapidly growing Italian immigrant population that had settled in Paterson during the city’s industrial boom.

Founding of the Parish

By the turn of the twentieth century, thousands of immigrants from southern Italy had made Paterson their home, finding employment in the city’s silk mills, locomotive works, and other factories. Although many attended St. John the Baptist Cathedral or other Catholic churches, language and cultural differences created a need for a parish where Italian immigrants could worship in their native language.

In 1903, the Diocese of Newark established St. Michael’s Parish. The congregation initially worshipped in the former Cross Street Methodist Church, which was purchased and adapted for Catholic services.

Construction of the Present Church

As the parish grew, the original church became too small. In 1928, construction began on the present church, which was completed and dedicated in 1929.

The new building was designed by prominent Paterson architect Joseph Bellomo (1885–1958), himself an Italian immigrant and parishioner of St. Michael’s. Bellomo designed numerous churches, schools, and commercial buildings throughout northern New Jersey. The church is considered one of his finest works, and he was later buried from St. Michael’s following his death in 1958.

Architecture

The church combines Italian Renaissance Revival and Italian Gothic Revival architectural styles.

Notable features include:

• A monumental brick façade with limestone trim
• Twin bell towers
• Round-arched entrances
• Large stained-glass windows
• Marble altars and decorative interior detailing
• Rich religious artwork reflecting Italian Catholic traditions

Its commanding presence has made it one of Paterson’s architectural landmarks for nearly a century.

Center of the Italian Community

For decades, St. Michael’s served as the religious and cultural heart of Paterson’s Italian neighborhood. Beyond regular worship services, the parish sponsored:

• Religious societies
• Feast day celebrations
• Processions honoring Italian saints
• Youth organizations
• Parish school activities
• Charitable outreach

The parish became a gathering place where newly arrived immigrants could preserve their language, customs, and traditions while becoming part of American society.

Mother Parish to Other Churches

As Paterson’s Italian population expanded into other neighborhoods and nearby communities, St. Michael’s played a major role in establishing new parishes.

Among those that trace their origins to St. Michael’s is St. Gerard Majella Church in the Hillcrest section of Paterson. In 1960, land donated by E. B. Leone was transferred to St. Michael’s for the creation of the new mission parish, which later became an independent congregation. St. Michael’s also helped establish several other Italian parishes in the city.

National Historic Recognition

Recognizing its architectural and historical significance, St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church was:

• Listed on the New Jersey Register of Historic Places on May 13, 1978
• Added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 15, 1978

These designations recognize both the beauty of the building and its importance in the history of Italian immigration and Catholicism in Paterson.

Today

St. Michael’s is presently closed due to structure problems, it is the hope of its members that it will be restored to its former glory and  devotions to St. Michael the Archangel, and long-standing community traditions. The church remains one of the Diocese of Paterson’s most recognizable historic parishes.
