The Passaic County Board of County Commissioners passed a resolution in May 2026 to fund various Open Space and Historic Preservation Fund grants for this year. Among these is $250,000 for purpose of matching an existing $250,000 New Jersey Historic Trust grant. The total of $500,000 will be used for emergency stabilization of the building.
The County is required to hold a public hearing about these grants, which is scheduled for TUESDAY, JULY 14 beginning at 5:30pm (following a special America 250 program). The hearing will be held at the Dey Mansion Washington’s Headquarters Historic Site, 199 Totowa Road, Wayne, NJ. If you would like to support this project, please consider coming to the hearing and speaking during the public portion to express your concerns and advocate for the Commissioners to award the funding for the emergency stabilization.
If you cannot make it to the meeting in person, you may write a letter to the County Commissioners prior to July 14th urging them to support the grant and explain in your own words why it is important for them to do so. Remember to request that your letter be made part of the public hearing record for that meeting.
Similarly, when actions requiring formal action by the Paterson Municipal Council are scheduled for their meetings at the Paterson City Hall, you may also attend the meeting to show your support and speak during the public portion to urge the Councilmembers to support the project.
Check back on this page for future postings of upcoming public meetings in future months concerning the Van Houten House.
If you cannot make it in person to a meeting, you can also write a letter to these elected officials to explain in your own words what the building means to your community, to the City of Paterson, and to Passaic County:
